  ingthecanoeacrosstheswiftcurrent,nosoonerdidtheDelawareandJasperfindthemselveswithintheinfluenceofitsgreatestforcethanbothbegantoswiminawaytochecktheirfartherprogressacrossthestream。Norwasthisdonesuddenly,orintheincautiousmannerinwhichacivilizedmanwouldhavebeenapttoattempttheartifice,butwarily,andsograduallythattheIroquoisatthebowfanciedatfirsthewasmerelystrugglingagainstthestrengthofthecurrent。Ofcourse,whileactedonbytheseopposingefforts,thecanoedrifteddownstream,andinaboutaminuteitwasfloatinginstilldeeperwateratthefootoftherift。Here,however,theIroquoiswasnotslowinfindingthatsomethingunusualretardedtheirad-

  sistedbytheeffortsofhiscompanions。

  lentreactionofthestrugglesofthetwocombatants。ThefirstimpulseoftheyouthwastoswimtotheaidoftheDelaware,buttheimportanceofsecuringtheboatpresenteditselfwithtenfoldforce,whilehelistenedtotheheavybreathingsofthewarriorsastheythrottledeachother,andheproceededasfastaspossibletowardsthewesternshore。Thishesoonreached。andafterashortsearchhesucceededindiscoveringtheremainderofthepartyandinprocuringhisclothes。AfewwordssufficedtoexplainthesituationinwhichhehadlefttheDelawareandthemannerinwhichthecanoehadbeenobtained。
  WhenthosewhohadbeenleftbehindhadheardtheexplanationsofJasper,aprofoundstillnessreignedamongthem,eachlisteningintentlyinthevainhopeofcatchingsomecluetotheresultofthefearfulstrugglethathadjusttakenplace,ifitwerenotstillgoingoninthewater。

  Asthearrangementnowstood,however,everythingde-
  pendedontheskillofthosewhoguidedthecanoes。forshouldeitherhitarock,ifnotsplitasunder,itwouldalmostcertainlybeupset,andthenwouldcomenotonlyallthehazardsoftheriveritself,but,forMabel,thecer-
  taintyoffallingintothehandsofherpersuers。Theutmostcircumspectionconsequentlybecamenecessary,andeachonewastoomuchengrossedwithhisownthoughtstofeeladispositiontouttermorethanwascalledforbytheexigenciesofthecase。
