Theymarched,theycounter—marched;theyopenedtotherightandleft;theydividedandsubdivided;theyclosed,theywheeled,madegoodtheirfrontandrearwiththeirrightandleftwings,andtwentythingsmore,withthataptness,andthenwereallasthewereagain,thattheytook—yea,ravished,theheartsthatwereinMansoultobeholdit。Butaddtothis,thehandlingoftheirarms,themanagingoftheirweaponsofwar,weremarvellouslytakingtoMansoulandme。
Whenthisactionwasover,thewholetownofMansoulcameoutasonemantothePrinceinthecamptothankhim,andpraisehimforhisabundantfavour,andtobegthatitwouldpleasehisgracetocomeuntoMansoulwithhismen,andtheretotakeuptheirquartersforever:andthistheydidinmosthumblemanner,bowingthemselvesseventimestothegroundbeforehim。Thensaidhe,’Allpeacebetoyou。’Sothetowncamenigh,andtouchedwiththehandthetopofhisgoldensceptre;andtheysaid,’Oh!thatthePrinceEmmanuel,withhiscaptainsandmenofwar,woulddwellinMansoulforever;

Theyanswered,’Weknownotwhatweshalldo;wedidnotthinkoncethatweshouldhavebeensuchtraitorstoShaddaiaswehaveprovedtobe。What,then,shallwesaytoourLord?Lethimputnotrustinhissaints;letthePrincedwellinourcastle,andmakeofourtownagarrison;lethimsethisnoblecaptainsandhiswarlikesoldiersoverus;yea,lethimconqueruswithhislove,andovercomeuswithhisgrace,andthensurelyshallhebebutwithus,andhelpus,ashewasanddidthatmorningthatourpardonwasreaduntous。WeshallcomplywiththisourLord,andwithhisways,andfallinwithhiswordagainstthemighty。
’Onewordmore,andthyservantshavedone,andinthiswilltroubleourLordnomore。Weknownotthedepthofthewisdomofthee,ourPrince。Whocouldhavethought,thathadbeenruledbyhisreason,thatsomuchsweetaswedonowenjoyshouldhavecomeoutofthosebittertrialswherewithweweretriedatthefirst!But,Lord,letlightgobefore,andletlovecomeafter:yea,takeusbythehand,andleadusbythycounsels,andletthisalwaysabideuponus,thatallthingsshallbethebestforthyservants,andcometoourMansoul,anddoasitpleaseththee。Or,Lord,cometoourMansoul,dowhatthouwilt,sothoukeepestusfromsinning,andmakestusserviceabletothyMajesty。’

ThendidthemenofMansoulgiveashout,andreturneduntotheirhousesinpeace;theyalsotoldtotheirkindredandfriendsthegoodthatEmmanuelhadpromisedtoMansoul。’Andto—morrow,’saidthey,’hewillmarchintoourtown,andtakeuphisdwelling,heandhismen,inMansoul。’
