WhenCaptainCredenceheardthis,awaygoeshetotherestofthecaptains,andtellsthemwhatanotehehadawhilesincereceivedfromthehandofEmmanuel。’And,’saidhe,’thatwhichwasdarkthereinhathmylordtheLordSecretaryexpoundeduntome。’Hetoldthem,moreover,whatbyhimselfandbythemmustbedonetoanswerthemindoftheirLord。

Well,thetimethatthecaptainsweretofallupontheDiaboloniansbeingcome,theyeagerlypreparedthemselvesforaction;forCaptainCredencehadtoldthecaptainsovernight,thattheyshouldmeettheirPrinceinthefieldto—
morrow。This,therefore,madethemyetfarmoredesiroustobeengagingtheenemy;for’YoushallseethePrinceinthefieldto—morrow’waslikeoiltoaflamingfire,forofalongtimetheyhadbeenatadistance:theythereforewereforthisthemoreearnestanddesirousofthework。So,asI
said,thehourbeingcome,CaptainCredence,withtherestofthemenofwar,drewouttheirforcesbeforeitwasdaybythesally—portofthetown。And,beingallready,CaptainCredencewentuptotheheadofthearmy,andgavetotherestofthecaptainstheword,andsotheytotheirunder—

Hopehadengagedthevocationdoubters,andtheyweresturdymen;butthecaptainwasavaliantman:CaptainExperiencedidalsosendhimsomeaid;sohemadethevocationdoubterstoretreat。Therestofthearmieswerehotlyengaged,andthatoneveryside,andtheDiaboloniansdidfightstoutly。
ThendidmyLordSecretarycommandthattheslingsfromthecastleshouldbeplayed;andhismencouldthrowstonesatanhair’sbreadth。But,afterawhile,thosethatweremadetoflybeforethecaptainsofthePrince,didbegintorallyagain,andtheycameupstoutlyupontherearofthePrince’sarmy:whereforethePrince’sarmybegantofaint;but,rememberingthattheyshouldseethefaceoftheirPrinceby—
and—by,theytookcourage,andaveryfiercebattlewasfought。Thenshoutedthecaptains,saying,’TheswordofthePrinceEmmanuel,andtheshieldofCaptainCredence!’andwiththatDiabolusgaveback,thinkingthatmoreaidhadbeencome。ButnoEmmanuelasyetappeared。Moreover,thebattledidhangindoubt;andtheymadealittleretreatonbothsides。Now,inthetimeofrespite,CaptainCredencebravelyencouragedhismentostandtoit;andDiabolusdidthelike,aswellashecould。ButCaptainCredencemadeabravespeechtohissoldiers,thecontentswhereofherefollow:—
’Gentlemensoldiers,andmybrethreninthisdesign,itrejoicethmemuchtoseeinthefieldforourPrince,thisday,sostoutandsovaliantanarmy,andsuchfaithfulloversofMansoul。Youhavehitherto,ashathbecomeyou,shownyourselvesmenoftruthandcourageagainsttheDiabolonianforces;sothat,foralltheirboast,theyhavenotyetmuchcausetoboastoftheirgettings。Nowtaketoyourselvesyourwontedcourage,andshowyourselvesmeneventhisonceonly;forinafewminutesafterthenextengagement,thistime,youshallseeyourPrinceshowhimselfinthefield;forwemustmakethissecondassaultuponthistyrantDiabolus,andthenEmmanuelcomes。’

ButwhenthecaptainssawthatthePrincewascome,andthathefellupontheDiaboloniansontheotherside,andthatCaptainCredenceandhisHighnesshadgotthemupbetwixtthem,theyshouted,(theysoshoutedthatthegroundrentagain,)saying,’TheswordofEmmanuel,andtheshieldofCaptainCredence!’Now,whenDiabolussawthatheandhisforcesweresohardbesetbythePrinceandhisprincelyarmy,whatdoeshe,andthelordsofthepitthatwerewithhim,butmaketheirescape,andforsaketheirarmy,andleavethemtofallbythehandofEmmanuel,andofhisnobleCaptainCredence:sotheyfellalldownslainbeforethem,beforethePrince,andbeforehisroyalarmy;therewasnotleftsomuchasonedoubteralive;theylayspreaduponthegrounddeadmen,asonewouldspreaddungupontheland。
Whenthebattlewasover,allthingscameintoorderinthecamp。ThenthecaptainsandeldersofMansoulcametogethertosaluteEmmanuel,whilewithoutthecorporation:sotheysalutedhim,andwelcomedhim,andthatwithathousandwelcomes,forthathewascometothebordersofMansoulagain。Sohesmileduponthem,andsaid,’Peacebetoyou。’
Thentheyaddressedthemselvestogotothetown;theywentthentogouptoMansoul,they,thePrince,withallthenewforcesthatnowhehadbroughtwithhimtothewar。Alsoallthegatesofthetownweresetopenforhisreception,sogladweretheyofhisblessedreturn。AndthiswasthemannerandorderofthisgoingofhisintoMansoul:
First。AsIsaid,allthegatesofthetownweresetopen,yea,thegatesofthecastlealso;theelders,too,ofthetownofMansoulplacedthemselvesatthegatesofthetown,tosalutehimathisentrancethither:andsotheydid;for,ashedrewnear,andapproachedtowardsthegates,theysaid,’Liftupyourheads,Oyegates;andbeyeliftup,yeeverlastingdoors;andtheKingofgloryshallcomein。’Andtheyansweredagain,’WhoistheKingofglory?’andtheymadereturntothemselves,’TheLord,strongandmighty;theLordmightyinbattle。Liftupyourheads,Oyegates;evenliftthemup,yeeverlastingdoors,’etc。
Secondly。Itwasorderedalso,bythoseofMansoul,thatallthewayfromthetowngatestothoseofthecastle,hisblessedMajestyshouldbeentertainedwiththesong,bythemthathadthebestskillinmusicinallthetownofMansoul:
thendidtheelders,andtherestofthemenofMansoul,answeroneanotherasEmmanuelenteredthetown,tillhecameatthecastlegates,withsongsandsoundoftrumpets,saying,’Theyhaveseenthygoings,OGod;eventhegoingsofmyGod,myKing,inthesanctuary。Sothesingerswentbefore,theplayersoninstrumentsfollowedafter,andamongthemwerethedamselsplayingontimbrels。’
Thirdly。Thenthecaptains,(forIwouldspeakawordofthem,)theyintheirorderwaitedonthePrince,asheenteredintothegatesofMansoul。CaptainCredencewentbefore,andCaptainGood—Hopewithhim;CaptainCharitycamebehindwithotherofhiscompanions,andCaptainPatiencefollowedafterall;andtherestofthecaptains,someontherighthand,andsomeontheleft,accompaniedEmmanuelintoMansoul。Andallthewhilethecoloursweredisplayed,thetrumpetssounded,andcontinualshoutingswereamongthesoldiers。ThePrincehimselfrodeintothetowninhisarmour,whichwasallofbeatengold,andinhischariot—
thepillarsofitwereofsilver,thebottomthereofofgold,thecoveringofitwasofpurple,themidstthereofbeingpavedwithloveforthedaughtersofthetownofMansoul。
Fourthly。WhenthePrincewascometotheentranceofMansoul,hefoundallthestreetsstrewedwithliliesandflowers,curiouslydeckedwithboughsandbranchesfromthegreentreesthatstoodroundaboutthetown。Everydooralsowasfilledwithpersons,whohadadornedeveryonetheirfore—partagainsttheirhousewithsomethingofvarietyandsingularexcellency,toentertainhimwithalashepassedinthestreets:theyalsothemselves,asEmmanuelpassedby,didwelcomehimwithshoutsandacclamationsofjoy,saying,’BlessedbethePrincethatcomethinthenameofhisFatherShaddai。’
Fifthly。AtthecastlegatestheeldersofMansoul,namely,theLordMayor,theLordWillbewill,thesubordinatepreacher,Mr。Knowledge,andMr。Mind,withotherofthegentryoftheplace,salutedEmmanuelagain。Theybowedbeforehim,theykissedthedustofhisfeet,theythanked,theyblessed,andpraisedhisHighnessfornottakingadvantageagainstthemfortheirsins,butratherhadpityuponthemintheirmisery,andreturnedtothemwithmercies,andtobuilduptheirMansoulforever。Thuswashehadupstraightwaytothecastle;forthatwastheroyalpalace,andtheplacewherehishonourwastodwell;thewhichwasreadypreparedforhisHighnessbythepresenceoftheLordSecretary,andtheworkofCaptainCredence。Soheenteredin。
Sixthly。ThenthepeopleandcommonaltyofthetownofMansoulcametohimintothecastletomourn,andtoweep,andtolamentfortheirwickedness,bywhichtheyhadforcedhimoutofthetown。Sowhentheywerecome,bowedthemselvestothegroundseventimes;theyalsowept,theyweptaloud,andaskedforgivenessofthePrince,andprayedthathewouldagain,asofold,confirmhislovetoMansoul。
TothewhichthegreatPrincereplied,’Weepnot,butgoyourway,eatthefat,anddrinkthesweet,andsendportionstothemforwhomnoughtisprepared;forthejoyofyourLordisyourstrength。IamreturnedtoMansoulwithmercies,andmynameshallbesetup,exalted,andmagnifiedbyit。’Healsotooktheseinhabitants,andkissedthem,andlaidtheminhisbosom。
Moreover,hegavetotheeldersofMansoul,andtoeachtownofficer,achainofgoldandasignet。Healsosenttotheirwivesearringsandjewels,andbracelets,andotherthings。
Healsobestoweduponthetrue—bornchildrenofMansoulmanypreciousthings。
WhenEmmanuel,thePrince,haddoneallthesethingsforthefamoustownofMansoul,thenhesaiduntothem,first,’Washyourgarments,thenputonyourornaments,andthencometomeintothecastleofMansoul。’SotheywenttothefountainthatwassetopenforJudahandJerusalemtowashin;andtheretheywashed,andtheretheymadetheir’garmentswhite,’andcameagaintothePrinceintothecastle,andthustheystoodbeforehim。
AndnowtherewasmusicanddancingthroughoutthewholetownofMansoul,andthatbecausetheirPrincehadagaingrantedtothemhispresenceandthelightofhiscountenance;thebellsalsodidring,andthesunshonecomfortablyuponthemforagreatwhiletogether。
ThetownofMansouldidalsonowmorethoroughlyseekthedestructionandruinofallremainingDiaboloniansthatabodeinthewalls,andthedensthattheyhadinthetownofMansoul;fortherewasofthemthathad,tothisday,escapedwithlifeandlimbfromthehandoftheirsuppressorsinthefamoustownofMansoul。
ButmyLordWillbewillwasagreaterterrortothemnowthaneverhehadbeenbefore;forasmuchashisheartwasyetmorefullybenttoseek,contrive,andpursuethemtothedeath;
hepursuedthemnightandday,anddidputthemnowtosoredistress,aswillafterwardsappear。
AfterthingswerethusfarputintoorderinthefamoustownofMansoul,carewastaken,andordergivenbytheblessedPrinceEmmanuel,thatthetownsmenshould,withoutfurtherdelay,appointsometogoforthintotheplaintoburythedeadthatwerethere,—thedeadthatfellbytheswordofEmmanuel,andbytheshieldoftheCaptainCredence,—lestthefumesandillsavoursthatwouldarisefromthemmightinfecttheair,andsoannoythefamoustownofMansoul。
Thisalsowasareasonofthisorder,namely,that,asmuchasinMansoullay,theymightcutoffthename,andbeing,andremembranceofthoseenemiesfromthethoughtofthefamoustownofMansoulanditsinhabitants。

Thedoubtersaresuchashavetheirnamefromtheirnature,aswellasfromthelandandkingdomwheretheyareborn:
theirnatureistoputaquestionuponeveryoneofthetruthsofEmmanuel;andtheircountryiscalledthelandofDoubting,andthatlandliethoff,andfarthestremotetothenorth,betweenthelandofDarknessandthatcalledthe’valleyoftheshadowofdeath。’ForthoughthelandofDarkness,andthatcalled’thevalleyoftheshadowofdeath,’besometimescalledasiftheywereoneandtheself—
sameplace,yetindeedtheyaretwo,lyingbutalittlewayasunder,andthelandofDoubtingpointsin,andliethbetweenthem。ThisisthelandofDoubting;andthesethatcamewithDiabolustoruinthetownofMansoularethenativesofthatcountry。
Theblood—menareapeoplethathavetheirnamederivedfromthemalignityoftheirnature,andfromthefurythatisinthemtoexecuteituponthetownofMansoul:theirlandliethunderthedog—star,andbythattheyaregovernedastotheirintellectuals。ThenameoftheircountryistheprovinceofLoath—good:theremotepartsofitarefardistantfromthelandofDoubting,yettheydobothbuttandbounduponthehillcalledHell—GateHill。Thesepeoplearealwaysinleaguewiththedoubters,fortheyjointlydomakequestionofthefaithandfidelityofthemenofthetownofMansoul,andsoarebothalikequalifiedfortheserviceoftheirprince。

Asforthedoubters,theircaptainswerefiveoftheseventhatwereheadsofthelastDiabolonianarmy,andthesearetheirnames:CaptainBeelzebub,CaptainLucifer,CaptainApollyon,CaptainLegion,andCaptainCerberus;andthecaptainsthattheyhadbeforeweresomeofthemmadelieutenants,andsomeensignsofthearmy。
