  SotheysetoutatHell—GateHill,fortheretheyhadtheirrendezvous,fromwhencetheycamewithastraightcourseupontheirmarchtowardthetownofMansoul。Now,aswashintedbefore,thetownhad,asShaddaiwouldhaveit,receivedfromthemouthofMr。Prywellthealarmoftheircomingbefore。
  Whereforetheysetastrongwatchatthegates,andhadalsodoubledtheirguards:theyalsomountedtheirslingsingoodplaces,wheretheymightconvenientlycastouttheirgreatstonestotheannoyanceoftheirfuriousenemy。
  NorcouldthoseDiaboloniansthatwereinthetowndothathurtaswasdesignedtheyshould;forMansoulwasnowawake。
  Butalas!poorpeople,theyweresorelyaffrightedatthefirstappearanceoftheirfoes,andattheirsittingdownbeforethetown,especiallywhentheyheardtheroaringoftheirdrum。This,tospeaktruth,wasamazinglyhideoustohear;itfrightedallmensevenmilesround,iftheywerebutawakeandheardit。Thestreamingoftheircolourswasalsoterribleanddejectingtobehold。
  WhenDiaboluswascomeupagainstthetown,firsthemadehisapproachtoEar—gate,andgaveitafuriousassault,supposing,asitseems,thathisfriendsinMansoulhadbeenreadytodotheworkwithin;butcarewastakenofthatbefore,bythevigilanceofthecaptains。Wherefore,missingofthehelpthatheexpectedfromthem,andfindinghisarmywarmlyattendedwiththestonesthattheslingersdidsling,(forthatIwillsayforthecaptains,thatconsideringtheweaknessthatyetwasuponthembyreasonofthelongsicknessthathadannoyedthetownofMansoul,theydidgallantlybehavethemselves,)hewasforcedtomakesomeretreatfromMansoul,andtoentrenchhimselfandhismeninthefieldwithoutthereachoftheslingsofthetown。
  Nowhavingentrenchedhimself,hedidcastupfourmountsagainstthetown:thefirsthecalledMountDiabolus,puttinghisownnamethereon,themoretoaffrightthetownofMansoul;theotherthreehecalledthus—MountAlecto,MountMegara,andMountTisiphone;forthesearethenamesofthedreadfulfuriesofhell。ThushebegantoplayhisgamewithMansoul,andtoserveitasdoththelionhisprey,eventomakeitfallbeforehisterror。But,asIsaid,thecaptainsandsoldiersresistedsostoutly,anddiddosuchexecutionwiththeirstones,thattheymadehim,thoughagainststomach,toretreat,whereforeMansoulbegantotakecourage。
  NowuponMountDiabolus,whichwasraisedonthenorthsideofthetown,theredidthetyrantsetuphisstandard,andafearfulthingitwastobehold;forhehadwroughtinitbydevilishart,afterthemannerofascutcheon,aflamingflamefearfultobehold,andthepictureofMansoulburninginit。
  WhenDiabolushadthusdone,hecommandedthathisdrummershouldeverynightapproachthewallsofthetownofMansoul,andsotobeataparley;thecommandwastodoitatnights,forinthedaytimetheyannoyedhimwiththeirslings;forthetyrantsaid,thathehadamindtoparleywiththenowtremblingtownofMansoul,andhecommandedthatthedrumsshouldbeateverynight,thatthroughwearinesstheymightatlast,ifpossible,(atthefirsttheywereunwillingyet,)beforcedtodoit。
