WitheagerhastetheycollectedthefewnecessarieswhichitwasthoughtpropertheCountessshouldtakewithher,andwhichJanet,withspeedanddexterity,formedintoasmallbundle,notforgettingtoaddsuchornamentsofintrinsicvalueascamemostreadilyinherway,andparticularlyacasketofjewels,whichshewiselyjudgedmightproveofserviceinsomefutureemergency。TheCountessofLeicesternextchangedherdressforonewhichJanetusuallyworeuponanybriefjourney,fortheyjudgeditnecessarytoavoideveryexternaldistinctionwhichmightattractattention。Erethesepreparationswerefullymade,themoonhadariseninthesummerheaven,andallinthemansionhadbetakenthemselvestorest,oratleasttothesilenceandretirementoftheirchambers。

AnthonyFosterhadaccustomedhimselftoconsiderhisdaughterasaconscioussinnermightregardavisibleguardianangel,which,notwithstandinghisguilt,continuedtohoveraroundhim;andthereforehistrustinherknewnobounds。Janetcommandedherownmotionsduringthedaytime,andhadamaster—keywhichopenedtheposterndoorofthepark,sothatshecouldgotothevillageatpleasure,eitheruponthehouseholdaffairs,whichwereentirelyconfidedtohermanagement,ortoattendherdevotionsatthemeeting—houseofhersect。ItistruethedaughterofFosterwasthusliberallyentrustedunderthesolemnconditionthatsheshouldnotavailherselfoftheseprivilegestodoanythinginconsistentwiththesafe—keepingoftheCountess;forsoherresidenceatCumnorPlacehadbeentermed,sinceshebeganoflatetoexhibitimpatienceoftherestrictionstowhichshewassubjected。NoristherereasontosupposethatanythingshortofthedreadfulsuspicionswhichthesceneofthateveninghadexcitedcouldhaveinducedJanettoviolateherwordordeceiveherfather'sconfidence。Butfromwhatshehadwitnessed,shenowconceivedherselfnotonlyjustified,butimperativelycalledupon,tomakeherlady'ssafetytheprincipalobjectofhercare,settingallotherconsiderationsaside。
