  Aboutthemiddleoftheeightcentury,Constantine,surnamedCopronymusbytheworshippersofimages,hadmadeanexpeditionintoArmenia,andfound,inthecitiesofMeliteneandTheodosiopolis,agreatnumberofPaulicians,hiskindredheretics。Asafavor,orpunishment,hetransplantedthemfromthebanksoftheEuphratestoConstantinopleandThrace;andbythisemigrationtheirdoctrinewasintroducedanddiffusedinEurope。^21Ifthesectariesofthemetropolisweresoonmingledwiththepromiscuousmass,thoseofthecountrystruckadeeprootinaforeignsoil。ThePauliciansofThraceresistedthestormsofpersecution,maintainedasecretcorrespondencewiththeirArmenianbrethren,andgaveaidandcomforttotheirpreachers,whosolicited,notwithoutsuccess,theinfantfaithoftheBulgarians。^22Inthetenthcentury,theywererestoredandmultipliedbyamorepowerfulcolony,whichJohnZimisces^23
