FromCubaRichardsailedwithourforcestoPortoRico,wherehisexperiencesintheSpanish-Americanwarcametoanend,andhereturnedtoMarion。HespentthefallinNewYork,andearlyin1899wenttoLondon。
Oneofthemostinteresting,certainlythemostwidelytalkedof,"sportingevents"forwhichRichardwasresponsiblewasthesendingofanEnglishdistrict-messengerboyfromLondontoChicago。Theideawasinspiredbymybrother'sgeneraladmirationoftheLondonmessengerserviceandhisparticularbeliefinoneWilliamThomasJaggers,afourteen-year-oldladwhomRichardhadfrequentlyemployedtocarrynotesandrunerrands。Oneday,duringacasualluncheonconversationattheSavoywithhisfriendSomersSomerset,RichardsaidthathebelievedthatifJaggerswereaskedtocarryamessagetoNewYorkthathecouldnotonlydoitbutwouldexpressnosurpriseatthecommission。
Thisconversationresultedinthebetdescribedinthefollowingletters。TheboyslippedquietlyawayfromLondon,butafewdayslaterthebetbecamepublicandthenewspaperswerefilledwithspeculationastowhetherJaggerscouldbeatthemails。Themessengercarriedthreeletters,onetomysister,onetoMissCecilClarkofChicago,whomRichardmarriedafewmonthslater,andonetomyself。
Asamatteroffact,Jaggersdeliveredhisnotesseveralhoursbeforeletterstravellingbythesameboatreachedthesamedestinations。ThenewspapersnotonlyprintedlongaccountsofJaggers'striumphalprogressfromNewYorktoChicagoandbackagain,butusedthesuccessofhisundertakingasatextformanyeditorialsagainstthedilatorymethodsofourforeign-mailservice。JaggersleftLondononMarch11,1899,andwasbackagainonthe29th,havingtravellednearlyeighty-fourhundredmilesineighteendays。Onhisreturnhewasreceivedliterallybyacrowdofthousands,andhisfeatwasgivenofficialrecognitionbyagoldmedalpinnedonhisyouthfulchestbytheDuchessofRutland。Also,lateron,atagardenfetehewaspresentedtotheQueen,andincidentally,stilllater,returnedtotheUnitedStatesas"buttons"tomybrother'shousehold。
