　　Thirdly:THEINSTRUMENTWITHWHCIHWEATTEMPTTOINVESTIGATETRUTH
　　ISIMPAIREDSomesayitfell，andtheglassisbrokenSomesayprejudice，heredity，orsin，havespoileditssight，andhaveblindedoureyesanddeadenedourearsInanycasetheinstrumentswithwhichweworkupontruth，eveninthestrongestmen，arefeebleandinadequatetotheirtremendoustask。

　　Entiresatisfactiontotheintellectisunattainableaboutanyofthegreaterproblems，andifyoutrytogettothebottomofthembyargument，thereisnobottomthere；andthereforeyoumakethematterworseButIwouldsaywhatisknown，andwhatcanbehonestlyandphilosophicallyandscientificallysaidaboutoneortwoofthedifficultiesthatthedoubterraises，justtoshowhimthatyoucandoit——toshowhimthatyouarenotafool——thatyouarenotmerelygropinginthedarkyourself，butyouhavefoundwhateverbasisispossibleButIwouldnotgoaroundallthedoctrinesIwouldsimplydothatwithoneortwo；becausethemomentyoucutoffone，ahundredotherheadswillgrowinitsplaceItwouldbeapityifalltheseproblemscouldbesolved。
　　ThejoyoftheintellectuallifewouldbelargelygoneIwouldnotrobamanofhisproblems，norwouldIhaveanothermanrobmeofmyproblemsTheyarethedelightoflife，andthewholeintellectualworldwouldbestaleandunprofitableifwekneweverything。
　　Fourthly——andthisisthegreatpoint:TURNAWAYFROMTHEREASON
　　ANDGOINTOTHEMAN'SMORALLIFE。
　　Idon'tmean，gointohismorallifeandseeifthemanislivinginconscioussin，whichisthegreatblinderoftheeyes——Iamspeakingnowofhonestdoubt；butopenanewdoorintoThepracticalsideofman'snature。
　　Entreathimnottopostponelifeandhislife'susefulnessuntilhehassettledtheproblemsoftheuniverseTellhimthoseproblemswillneverallbesettled；thathislifewillbedonebeforehehasbeguntosettlethem；andaskhimwhatheisdoingwithhislifemeantimeChargehimwithwastinghislifeandhisusefulness；
