  IfanyonecannotconceiveorrealizeamysticalrelationwithChrist,perhapsallthatcanbedoneistohelphimtostepontoitbystillplaineranalogiesfromcommonlifeHowdoIknowShakespereorDante?Bycommuningwiththeirwordsandthoughts。
  ManymenknowDantebetterthantheirownfathersManymenknowDantebetterthantheirownfathersHeinfluencesthemmoreAsaspiritualpresenceheismoreneartothem,asaspiritualforcemorerealIsthereanyreasonwhyagreaterthanShakspereorDante,whoalsowalkedthisearth,wholeftgreatwordsbehindHim,whohasgreaterworkseverywhereintheworldnow,shouldnotalsoinstruct,inspireandmouldthecharactersofmen?IdonotlimitChrist'sinfluencetothis:itisthis,anditismoreButChrist,sofarfromresentingordiscouragingthisrelationofFriendship,Himselfproposedit"Abideinme"wasalmostHislastwordtotheworldAndHepartlymetthedifficultyofthosewhofeelitsintangiblenessbyaddingthepracticalclause,"IfyeabideinMe,ANDMYWORDSABIDEINYOU。"
  BeginwithHiswordsWordscanscarcelyeverbelongimpersonal。

  IfyoucannotatonceandalwaysfeeltheplayofHislifeuponyours,watchforitalsoindirectly"ThewholeearthisfullofthecharacteroftheLord。"ChrististheLightoftheworld,andmuchofhisLightisreflectedfromthingsintheworld——evenfromcloudsSunlightisstoredineveryleaf,fromleafthroughcoal,anditcomfortsusthencewhendaysaredarkandwecannotseethesunChristshinesthroughmen,throughbooks,throughhistory,throughnature,music,artLookforHimthere"Everydayoneshouldeitherlookatabeautifulpicture,orhearbeautifulmusic,orreadabeautifulpoem。"Therealdangerofmysticismisnotmakingitbroadenough。
  Donotthinkthatnothingishappeningbecauseyoudonotseeyourselfgrow,orhearthewhirofthemachineryAllgreatthingsgrownoiselesslyYoucanseeamushroomgrow,butneverachild。
  Paulsaidforthecomfortingofallslowlyperfectingsoulsthattheygrew"fromcharactertocharacter。""Theinwardman,"hesayselsewhere,"isrenewedfromdaytoday。"Allthoroughworkisslow;alltruedevelopmentbyminute,slightandinsensiblemetamorphosesThehigherthestructure,moreover,theslowertheprogressAsthebiologistrunshiseyeoverthelongAscentofLife,heseesthelowestformsofanimalsdevelopinanhour;thenextabovethesereachmaturityinaday;thosehigherstilltakeweeksormonthstoperfect;butthefewatthetopdemandthelongexperimentofyearsIfachildandanapearebornonthesameday,thelastwillbeinfullpossessionofitsfacultiesanddoingtheactiveworkoflifebeforethechildhasleftitscradleLifeisthecradleofeternityAsthemanistotheanimalintheslownessofhisevolution,soisthespiritualmantothenaturalmanFoundationswhichhavetobeartheweightofaneternallifemustbesurelylaidCharacteristowearforever;whowillwonderorgrudgethatitcannotbedevelopedinaday?
  Toawaitthegrowingofasoul,nevertheless,isanalmostDivineactoffaithHowpardonable,surely,theimpatienceofdeformitywithitself,ofaconsciouslydespicablecharacterstandingbeforeChrist,wondering,yearning,hungeringtobelikethat!Yetmustonetrusttheprocessfearlesslyandwithoutmisgiving"TheLordtheSpirit"willdoHispartThetemptingexpedientis,inhasteforabruptorvisibleprogress,totrysomemethodlessspiritual,ortodefeattheendbywatchingforeffectsinsteadofkeepingtheeyeontheCauseAphotographprintsfromthenegativeonlywhileexposedtothesunWhiletheartistislookingtoseehowitisgettingonhesimplystopsthegettingonWhateverofwisesupervisionthesoulmayneed,itiscertainitcanneverbeover-exposed,orthat,beingexposed,anythingelseintheworldcanimprovetheresultorquickenitThecreationofanewheart,therenewingofarightspirit,isanomnipotentworkofGod。
  LeaveittotheCreator"Hewhichhathbegunagoodworkinyouwillperfectituntothatday。"
  Noman,nevertheless,whofeelstheworthandsolemnityofwhatisatstakewillbecarelessastohisprogressTobecomeLikeChrististheonlythingintheworldworthcaringfor,thethingbeforewhicheveryambitionofmanisfolly,andalllowerachievementvain。
  ThoseonlywhomakethisquestthesupremedesireandpassionoftheirlivescaneverbegintohopetoreachitIf,therefore,ithasseemeduptothispointasifalldependedonpassivity,letmenowassert,withconvictionmoreintense,thatalldependsonactivityAreligionofeffortlessadorationmaybeareligionforanangel,butneverforamanNointhecontemplative,butintheactive,liestruehope;notinrapture,butinreality,liestruelife;notintherealmofideals,butamongtangiblethings,isman'ssanctificationwroughtResolution,effort,pain,self-crucifixion,agony——allthethingsalreadydismissedasfutileinthemselves,mustnowberestoredtooffice,andatenfoldresponsibilitylaiduponthemForwhatistheiroffice?Nothinglessthantomovethevastinertiaofthesoul,andplaceit,andkeepitwherethespiritualforceswillactuponitItistorallytheforcesofthewill,andkeepthesurfaceofthemirrorbrightandeverinpositionItistouncoverthefacewhichistolookatChrist,anddrawdowntheveilwhenunhallowedsightsarenear。
  Youhave,perhaps,gonewithanastronomertowatchhimphotographthespectrumofastarAsyouenterthedarkvaultoftheobservatoryyousawhimbeingbylightingacandleToseethestarwith?No;buttoadjusttheinstrumenttoseethestarwith。
  Itwasthestarthatwasgoingtotakethephotograph;itwas,also,theastronomerForalongtimeheworkedinthedimness,screwingtubesandpolishinglensesandadjustingreflectors,andonlyaftermuchlaborthefinelyfocusedinstrumentwasbroughttobearThenheblewoutthelight,andleftthestarttodoitsworkupontheplatealone。
  Theday'staskfortheChristianistobringhisinstrumenttobear。
  HavingdonethathemayblowouthiscandleAlltheevidencesofChristianitywhichhavebroughthimthere,allaidstoFaith,allactsofworship,alltheleveragesoftheChurch,allPrayerandMeditation,allgirdingoftheWill——theselesserprocesses,thesecandle-lightactivitiesforthatsupremehour,maybesetaside。
  But,remember,itisbutforanhourThewisemanwillbehewhoquickestlightshiscandle;thewisesthewhoneverletsitout。
  Tomorrow,thenextmoment,he,apoor,darkened,blurredsoul,mayneeditagaintofocustheImagebetter,totakeamoteoffthelens,toclearthemirrorfromabreathwithwhichtheworldhasdulledit。
  NoreadjustmentiseverrequiredonbehalfoftheStarThatisonegreatfixedpointinthisshiftinguniverseButTHEWORLD
  MOVESAndeachday,eachhour,demandsafurthermotionandreadjustmentforthesoulAtelescopeinanobservatoryfollowsastarbyclockwork,buttheclockworkofthesouliscalledTHE
  WILLHence,whilethesoulinpassivityreflectstheImageoftheLord,theWillinintenseactivityholdsthemirrorinpositionlestthedriftingmotionoftheworldbearitbeyondthelineofvisionTo"followChrist"islargelytokeepthesoulinsuchpositionaswillallowforthemotionoftheearthAndthiscalculatedcounteractingofthemovementsoftheworld,thisholdingofthemirrorexactlyoppositetotheMirrored,thissteadyingofthefacultiesunerringlythroughcloudandearthquake,fireandsword,isthestupendousco-operatinglaboroftheWillItisallman'sworkItisallChrist'sworkInpracticeitisboth;
  intheoryitisbothButthewisemanwillsayinpractice,"Itdependsuponmyself。"
  IntheGalleriedesBeauxArtsinParistherestandsafamousstatueItwasthelastworkofagreatgenius,who,likemanyagenius,wasverypoorandlivedinagarret,whichservedasastudioandsleeping-roomalikeWhenthestatuewasallbutfinished,onemidnightasuddenfrostfelluponParisThesculptorlayawakeinthefirelessroomandthoughtofthestillmoistclay,thoughthowthewaterwouldfreezeintheporesanddestroyinanhourthedreamofhislifeSotheoldmanrosefromhiscouchandheapedthebed-clothesreverentlyroundhisworkInthemorningwhentheneighborsenteredtheroomthesculptorwasdead,butthestatuewassaved!
  TheImageofChristthatisformingwithinus——thatislife'sonechargeLeteveryprojectstandasideforthatThespiritofGodwhobroodeduponthewatersthousandsofyearsago,isbusynowcreatingmen,withinthesecommonplacelivesofours,intheimageofGod"TillChristbeformed,"noman'sworkisfinished,noreligioncrowned,nolifehasfulfilleditsendIstheinfinitetaskbegun?When,how,arewetobedifferent?TimecannotchangemenDeathcannotchangemenChristcanWhereforePUT
  ONCHRIST。
  DealingWithDoubt。
  ThereisasubjectwhichIthinkworkersamongstyoungmencannotaffordtokeepoutofsight——Imeanthesubjectof"Doubt。"WeareforcedtofacethatsubjectWehavenochoiceIwouldratherletitalone;buteverydayofmylifeImeetmenwhodoubt,andI
  amquitesurethatmostChristianworkersamongmenhaveinnumerableinterviewseveryyearwithmenwhoraiseskepticaldifficultiesaboutreligion。
  NowitbecomesamatterofgreatpracticalimportancethatweshouldknowhowtodealwiselywiththeseUponthewhole,IthinkthesearethebestmeninthecountryIspeakofmyowncountryIspeakoftheuniversitieswithwhichIamfamiliar,andIsaythattheymenwhoareperplexed,——themenwhocometoyouwithseriousandhonestdifficulties,——arethebestmenTheyaremenofintellectualhonesty,andcannotallowthemselvestobeputtorestbywords,orphrases,ortraditions,ortheologies,butwhomustgettothebottomofthingsforthemselvesAndifIamnotmistaken,ChristwasveryfondofthesemenTheoutsidersalwaysinterestedHim,andtouchedHim。
  Theorthodoxpeople——thePharisees——HewasmuchlessinterestedinHewentwithpublicansandsinners——withpeoplewhowereinrevoltagainsttherespectability,intellectualandreligious,ofthedayAndfollowingHim,weareentitledtogivesympatheticconsiderationtothosewhomHelovedandtooktroublewith。
  First,letmespeakforamomentortwoaboutTheoriginofdoubt。
  Inthefirstplace,WEAREBORNQUESTIONERSLookatthewondermentofalittlechildinitseyesbeforeitcanspeakThechild'sgreatwordwhenitbeginstospeakis,"Why?"Everychildisfullofeverykindofquestion,abouteverykindofthing,thatmoves,andshinesandchanges,inthelittleworldinwhichitlives。
  ThatistheincipientdoubtinthenatureofmanRespectdoubtforitsoriginItisaninevitablethingItisnotathingtobecrushedItisapartofmanasGodmadehimHeresyistruthinthemaking,anddoubtisthepreludeofknowledge。
  Secondly:THEWORLDISASPHINXItisavastriddle——anunfathomablemystery;andoneverysidethereistemptationtoquestioning。
  Ineveryleaf,ineverycellofeveryleaf,thereareahundredproblemsTherearetengoodyearsofaman'slifeininvestigatingwhatisinaleafGodhasplannedtheworldtoincitementointellectualactivity。
  Thirdly:THEINSTRUMENTWITHWHCIHWEATTEMPTTOINVESTIGATETRUTH
  ISIMPAIREDSomesayitfell,andtheglassisbrokenSomesayprejudice,heredity,orsin,havespoileditssight,andhaveblindedoureyesanddeadenedourearsInanycasetheinstrumentswithwhichweworkupontruth,eveninthestrongestmen,arefeebleandinadequatetotheirtremendoustask。
  Andinthefourthplace,ALLRELIGIOUSTRUTHSAREDOUBTABLEThereisnoabsolutetruthforanyoneofthemEventhatfundamentaltruth——theexistenceofaGod——nomancanprovebyreasonTheordinaryprooffortheexistenceofaGodinvolveseitheranassumption,argumentinacircle,oracontradictionTheimpressionofGodiskeptupbyexperience,notbylogicAndhence,whentheexperimentalreligionofaman,ofacommunity,orofanationwanes,religionwanes——theirideaofGodgrowsindistinct,andthatman,communityornationbecomesinfidel。
  Bearinmind,then,thatallreligioustruthsaredoubtable——eventhosewhichweholdmoststrongly。
  Whatdoesthisbriefaccountoftheoriginofdoubtteachus?ItteachesusGreatintellectualhumility。
  Itteachesussympathyandtolerationwithallmenwhoventureupontheoceanoftruthtofindoutapaththroughitforthemselves。
  Doyousometimesfeelyourselfthinkingunkindthingsaboutyourfellow-studentswhohaveintellectualdifficulty?Iknowhowharditisalwaystofeelsympathyandtolerationforthem;butwemustaddressourselvestothatmostcarefullyandmostreligiouslyIfmybrotherisshort-sightedImustnotabusehimorspeakagainsthim;Imustpityhim,andifpossibletrytoimprovehissight,ortomakethingsthatheistolookatsobrightthathecannothelpseeingButneverletusthinkevilofmenwhodonotseeaswedoFromthebottomofourheartsletuspitythem,andletustakethembythehandandspendtimeandthoughtoverthem,andtrytoleadthemtothetruelight。
  WhathasbeenThechurch'streatmentofdoubtinthepast?Ithasbeenverysimple"ThereisahereticBurnhim!"Thatisall"Thereisamanwhohasgoneofftheroad。
  Bringhimbackandtorturehim!"
  Wehavegotpastthatphysically;havewegotpastitmorally?WhatdoesthemodernChurchsaytoamanwhoisskeptical?Not"Burnhim!"but"Brandhim!""Brandhim!"——callhimabadnameAndinmanycountriesatthepresenttime,amanwhoisbrandedasahereticisdespised,tabooedandputoutofreligioussociety,muchmorethanifhehadgonewronginmoralsIthinkIamspeakingwithinthefactswhenIsaythatamanwhoisunsoundislookeduponinmanycommunitieswithmoresuspicionandwithmorepioushorrorthanamanwhonowandthengetsdrunk"Burnhim!""Brandhim!""Excommunicatehim!"ThathasbeentheChurch'streatmentofdoubt,andthatisperhapstosomeextentthetreatmentwhichweourselvesareinclinedtogivetothemenwhocannotseethetruthsofChristianityasweseethem。
  ContrastChrist'streatmentofdoubtIhavespokenalreadyofHisstrangepartialityfortheoutsiders——forthescatteredhereticsupanddownthecountry;ofthecarewithwhichHelovedtodealwiththem,andoftherespectinwhichHeheldtheirintellectualdifficultiesChristneverfailedtodistinguishbetweendoubtandunbeliefDoubtis"CAN'T
  BELIEVE";unbeliefis"WON'TBELIEVE。"Doubtishonesty;unbeliefisobstinacyDoubtislookingforlight;unbeliefiscontentwithdarknessLovingdarknessratherthanlight——thatiswhatChristattacked,andattackedunsparinglyButfortheintellectualquestioningofThomas,andPhilip,andNicodemus,andthemanyotherswhocametoHimtohavetheirgreatproblemssolved,Hewasrespectfulandgenerousandtolerant。
  AndhowdidHemeettheirdoubts?TheChurch,asIhavesaid,says,"Brandhim!"Christsaid,"Teachhim。"HedestroyedbyfulfillingWhenThomascametoHimanddeniedHisveryresurrection,andstoodbeforeHimwaitingforthescathingwordsandlashingforhisunbelief,theynevercameTheynevercame!Christgavehimfacts——facts!NomencangoaroundfactsChristsaid,"BeholdMyhandsandMyfeet。"ThegreatgodofscienceatthepresenttimeisafactItwordswithfactsItscryis,"Givemefacts。
  Foundanythingyoulikeuponfactsandwewillbelieveit。"ThespiritofChristwasthescientificspiritHefoundedHisreligionuponfacts;andHeaskedallmentofoundtheirreligionuponfacts。
  Now,getupthefactsofChristianity,andtakementothefacts。
  Theologies——andIamnotspeakingdisrespectfullyoftheology;
  theologyisasscientificathingasanyotherscienceoffacts——buttheologiesareHumanversionsofDivinetruths,andhencethevarietiesoftheversionsandtheinconsistenciesofthemIwouldallowamantoselectwhicheverversionofthistruthhelikedAFTERWARDS;butIwouldaskhimtobeginwithnoversion,butgobacktothefactsandbasehisChristianlifeuponthese。
  ThatisthegreatlessonoftheNewTestamentwayoflookingatdoubt——ofChrist'streatmentofdoubtItisnot"Brandhim!"——butlovingly,wiselyandtenderlytoteachhimFaithisneveropposedtoreasonintheNewTestament;itisopposedtosightYouwillfindthataprincipleworththinkingoverFAITHISNEVEROPPOSED
  TOREASONINTHENEWTESTAMENT,BUTTOSIGHT。
  Withtheseprinciplesinmindastotheoriginofdoubt,astoChrist'streatmentofit,howareweourselvestodealwiththosewhoareinintellectualdifficulty?
  Inthefirstplace,IthinkWEMUSTMAKEALLTHECONCESSIONSTO
  THEMTHATWECONSCIENTIOUSLYCAN。
  Whenadoubterfirstencountersyou,hepoursoutadelugeofabuseofchurches,andministers,andcreeds,andChristiansNine-tenthsofwhathesaysisprobablytrueMakeconcessionsAgreewithhimItdoeshimgoodtounburdenhimselfofthesethingsHehasbeencherishingthemforyears——layingthemupagainstChristians,againsttheChurch,andagainstChristianity;andnowheisstartledtofindthefirstChristianwithwhomhehastalkedoverthethingalmostentirelyagreeswithhimWeare,ofcourse,notresponsibleforeverythingthatissaidinthenameofChristianity;andnowheisstartledtofindthefirstChristianwithwhomhehastalkedoverthethingalmostentirelyagreeswithhimWeare,ofcourse,notresponsibleforeverythingthatissaidinthenameofChristianity;butamandoesnotgiveupmedicinebecausetherearequackdoctors,andnomanhasarighttogiveuphisChristianitybecausetherearespuriousorinconsistentChristiansThen,asI
  alreadysaid,creedsarehumanversionsofDivinetruths;andwedonotaskamantoacceptallthecreeds,anymorethanweaskhimtoacceptalltheChristiansWeaskhimtoacceptChrist,andthefactsaboutChristandthewordsofChristYouwillfindthebattleishalfwonwhenyouhaveendorsedtheman'sobjections,andpossiblyaddedagreatmanymoretothechargeswhichhehasagainstourselvesThesemenareInrevoltagainstthekindofreligionwhichweexhibittotheworld——againstthecantthatistaughtinthenameofChristianityAndifthementhathaveneverseentherealthing——ifyoucouldshowthemthat,theywouldreceiveitaseagerlyasyoudoTheyaremerelyinrevoltagainsttheimperfectionsandinconsistenciesofthosewhorepresentChristtotheworld。
  Second:BEGTHEMTOSETASIDE,BYANACTOFWILL,ALLUNSOLVED
  PROBLEMS:suchastheproblemoftheoriginofevil,theproblemoftheTrinity,theproblemoftherelationofhumanwillandpredestination,andsoon——problemswhichhavebeeninvestigatedforthousandsofyearswithoutresult——askthemtosetthoseproblemsasideasinsolubleInthemeantime,justasamanwhoisstudyingmathematicsmaybeaskedtosetasidetheproblemofsquaringthecircle,lethimgoonwithwhatcanbedone,andwhathasbeendone,andleaveoutofsighttheimpossible。
  Youwillfindthatwillrelievetheskeptic'smindofagreatdealofUnnecessarycargothathasbeeninhisway。
  Thirdly:TALKINGABOUTDIFFICULTIES,ASARULE,ONLYAGGRAVATES
  THEM。
  Entiresatisfactiontotheintellectisunattainableaboutanyofthegreaterproblems,andifyoutrytogettothebottomofthembyargument,thereisnobottomthere;andthereforeyoumakethematterworseButIwouldsaywhatisknown,andwhatcanbehonestlyandphilosophicallyandscientificallysaidaboutoneortwoofthedifficultiesthatthedoubterraises,justtoshowhimthatyoucandoit——toshowhimthatyouarenotafool——thatyouarenotmerelygropinginthedarkyourself,butyouhavefoundwhateverbasisispossibleButIwouldnotgoaroundallthedoctrinesIwouldsimplydothatwithoneortwo;becausethemomentyoucutoffone,ahundredotherheadswillgrowinitsplaceItwouldbeapityifalltheseproblemscouldbesolved。
  ThejoyoftheintellectuallifewouldbelargelygoneIwouldnotrobamanofhisproblems,norwouldIhaveanothermanrobmeofmyproblemsTheyarethedelightoflife,andthewholeintellectualworldwouldbestaleandunprofitableifwekneweverything。
  Fourthly——andthisisthegreatpoint:TURNAWAYFROMTHEREASON
  ANDGOINTOTHEMAN'SMORALLIFE。
  Idon'tmean,gointohismorallifeandseeifthemanislivinginconscioussin,whichisthegreatblinderoftheeyes——Iamspeakingnowofhonestdoubt;butopenanewdoorintoThepracticalsideofman'snature。
  Entreathimnottopostponelifeandhislife'susefulnessuntilhehassettledtheproblemsoftheuniverseTellhimthoseproblemswillneverallbesettled;thathislifewillbedonebeforehehasbeguntosettlethem;andaskhimwhatheisdoingwithhislifemeantimeChargehimwithwastinghislifeandhisusefulness;
  andinvitehimtodealwiththemoralandpracticaldifficultiesoftheworld,andleavetheintellectualdifficultiesashegoesalongTospendtimeupontheseisprovingthelessimportantbeforethemoreimportant;and,astheFrenchsay,"Thegoodistheenemyofthebest。"Itisagoodthingtothink;itisabetterthingtowork——itisabetterthingtodogoodAndyouhavehimthere,youseeHecan'tgetbeyondthatYouhavetotellhim,infactthattherearetwoorgansofknowledge:theonereason,theotherobedienceAndnowtellhimthereisbutOne,andleadhimtothegreathistoricalfigurewhocallsallmentoHim:theoneperfectlife——theoneSaviorofmankind——theoneLightoftheworldAskhimtobegintoObeyChrist;
  and,doingHiswill,heshallnowofthedoctrinewhetheritbeofGod。
  That,Ithink,isabouttheonlythingyoucandowithaman:togethimintopracticalcontactwiththeneedsoftheworld,andtolethimlosehisintellectualdifficultiesmeantimeDon'taskhimtogivethemupaltogetherTellhimtosolvethemafterwardonebyoneifhecan,butmeantimetogivehislifetoChristandhistimetothekingdomofGodYoufetchhimcompletelyaroundwhenyoudothatYouhavetakenhimawayfromthefalsesideofhisnature,andtothepracticalandmoralsideofhisnature;andforthefirsttimeinhislife,perhaps,heputsthingsintheirtrueplaceHeputshisnatureintherelationsinwhichitoughttobe,andhethenonlybeginstoliveAndbyobediencehewillsoonbecomealearnerandpupilforhimself,andChristwillteachhimthings,andhewillfindwhateverproblemsaresolvablegraduallysolvedashegoesalongthepathofpracticalduty。
  Now,letme,inclosing,giveaninstanceofhowtodealwithspecificpoints。
  Thequestionofmiraclesisthrownatmyheadeverysecondday:
  "Whatdoyousaytoamanwhenhesaystoyou,'Whydoyoubelieveinmiracles?'"
