  "ShallIeverforgettheblastofdrivingrainthatstruckourfacesandenvelopedusinacloudofwet,asthedoorswungonitshingesandletusforthintothenight;ortheelectricthrillthatshotthroughmeasthatslendergirlgraspedmyhandanddrewmeawaythroughtheblindingdarkness。ItwasnotthatIwassomuchaffectedbyherbeautyasinfluencedbyherpowerandenergy。Thefuryofthegaleseemedtobendtoherwill,thewindlendwingstoherfeet。Ibegantorealizewhatintellectwas。Arrivedattheroadside,shepausedandlookedback。Thetwoburlyformsofthemenwehadleftbehinduswerestandinginthedooroftheinn;inanothermomenttheyhadplungedforthandtowardsus。WithalowcrytheyounggirlleapedtowardsatreewheretomyunboundedastonishmentIbeheldmyhorsestandingreadysaddled。Draggingthemarefromherfastenings,shehungthelantern,burningasitwas,onthepommelofthesaddle,struckthepantingcreatureasmartblowupontheflank,anddrewbackwithaleaptomyside。
