  Butthehousehadnotdonewithserenadesthatnight。Theguestshadlongsincedeparted;thewindowswerestillanddarkunderthewanoldmoon,whichhadrisenlamely,lookingunfamiliarandnothalfitself;theairboreanodoroflateness,andnothingmoved;whenadelicateharmonystoleoutoftheshadowsbeyondthemistygarden。Lowbutresonantchordssoundedontheheavierstringsofaguitar,whileabovethem,uponthelighterwires,rippledaslender,tinklingmelodythatwooedtheslumberertoadelicioushalf-wakefulness,asdreamily,astenderly,asthecroonofrainontheroofsoothesachildtosleep。Undertheartist’scunningtouchtheinstrumentwasboththeaccompanimentandthesong;andMissBetty,atfirsttakingthemusictobeawanderingthreadinthefabricofherownbrightdreams,driftedgraduallytoconsciousnesstofindherselfsmiling。Hereyesopenedwide,buthalfclosedagainwiththeineffablesweetnessofthesound。

  butthegentlerefusalpreventedneveraswainfrombeingastrulyherfollowerasbefore;notthatsheresortedtothepoordeviceofhalf-
