  THEimpedimentoftongueswasonethatIparticularlyover-
  estimated。ThelanguagesofPolynesiaareeasytosmatter,thoughhardtospeakwithelegance。Andtheyareextremelysimilar,sothatapersonwhohasatinctureofoneortwomayrisk,notwithouthope,anattemptupontheothers。
  Andagain,notonlyisPolynesianeasytosmatter,butinterpretersabound。Missionaries,traders,andbrokenwhitefolklivingonthebountyofthenatives,aretobefoundinalmosteveryisleandhamlet;andevenwheretheseareunserviceable,thenativesthemselveshaveoftenscrapedupalittleEnglish,andintheFrenchzonethoughfarlesscommonlyalittleFrench-English,oranefficientpidgin,whatiscalledtothewestward’Beach-la-Mar,’

  Buttobeabletospeaktopeopleisnotall。AndinthefirststageofmyrelationswithnativesIwashelpedbytwothings。Tobeginwith,Iwastheshow-manoftheCASCO。She,herfinelines,tallspars,andsnowydecks,thecrimsonfittingsofthesaloon,andthewhite,thegilt,andtherepeatingmirrorsofthetinycabin,broughtusahundredvisitors。Themenfathomedoutherdimensionswiththeirarms,astheirfathersfathomedouttheshipsofCook;thewomendeclaredthecabinsmorelovelythanachurch;
