IthinkImayclaimthatthisisoneofthoseoccasions。Ihavedeliveredmylastanatomicallectureandheardmyclassreciteforthelasttime。Theywishtohearfrommeagaininalessscholasticmoodthanthatinwhichtheyhaveknownme。Willyounotindulgemeintellingyousomethingofmyownstory?
Thisisthethirty-sixthCourseofLecturesinwhichIhavetakenmyplaceandperformedmydutiesasProfessorofAnatomy。FormorethanhalfofmytermofofficeIgaveinstructioninPhysiology,afterthefashionofmypredecessorsandinthemannerthengenerallyprevalentinourschools,wherethephysiologicallaboratorywasnotanecessarypartoftheapparatusofinstruction。ItwaswithmyheartyapprovalthattheteachingofPhysiologywasconstitutedaseparatedepartmentandmadeanindependentProfessorship。Beforemytime,Dr。WarrenhadtaughtAnatomy,Physiology,andSurgeryinthesamecourseofLectures,lastingonlythreeorfourmonths。Astheboundariesofscienceareenlarged,newdivisionsandsubdivisionsofitsterritoriesbecomenecessary。IntheplaceofsixProfessorsin1847,whenIfirstbecameamemberoftheFaculty,IcounttwelveupontheCataloguebeforeme,andIfindthewholenumberengagedintheworkofinstructionintheMedicalSchoolamountstonolessthanfifty。
SinceIbeganteachinginthisschool,theaspectofmanybranchesofsciencehasundergoneaveryremarkabletransformation。ChemistryandPhysiologyarenolongerwhattheywere,astaughtbytheinstructorsofthattime。Wearelookingforwardtothesynthesisofneworganiccompounds;ourartificialmadderisalreadyinthemarket,andtheindigo-raisersarenowfearingthattheircropwillbesupplantedbythemanufacturedarticle。Inthelivingbodywetalkoffuelsuppliedandworkdone,inmovement,inheat,justasifweweredealingwithamachineofourowncontrivance。

Butwhilemanyofthescienceshavesochangedthattheteachersofthepastwouldhardlyknowthem,ithasnotbeensowiththebranchI
