  Itisnotnecessarytomaintainthedirectpracticalutilityofallkindsoflearning。Ourshelvescontainmanybookswhichonlyacertainclassofmedicalscholarswillbelikelytoconsult。Thereisadeadmedicalliterature,andthereisaliveone。Thedeadisnotallancient,theliveisnotallmodern。Thereisnone,modernorancient,which,ifithasnolivingvalueforthestudent,willnotteachhimsomethingbyitsautopsy。Butitiswiththeliveliteratureofhisprofessionthatthemedicalpractitionerisfirstofallconcerned。
  Nowtherehascomeagreatchangeinourtimeovertheforminwhichlivingthoughtpresentsitself。Thefirstprintedbooks,——theincunabula,——wereinclosedinboardsofsolidoak,withbrazenclaspsandcorners;theboardsbyandbywerereplacedbypasteboardcoveredwithcalforsheepskin;thenclothcameinandtooktheplaceofleather;thenthepasteboardwascoveredwithpaperinsteadofcloth;
