  3。Ihavesaid,thattoshowthetruthoftheHomoeopathicdoctrine,asannouncedbyHahnemann,itwouldbenecessarytoshow,inthethirdplace,thatremediesnevercurediseaseswhentheyarenotcapableofproducingsimilarsymptoms!Theburdenofthissomewhatcomprehensivedemonstrationlyingentirelyupontheadvocatesofthisdoctrine,itmaybelefttotheirmaturereflections。
  ItenteredintomyoriginalplantotreatofthedoctrinerelatingtoPsora,oritch,——analmostinsaneconception,whichIamgladtogetridof,forthisisasubjectonedoesnotcaretohandlewithoutgloves。Iamsavedthistrouble,however,byfindingthatmanyofthedisciplesofHahnemann,thosedisciplestheverygospelofwhosefaithstandsuponhisword,makeverylightofhisauthorityonthispoint,althoughhehimselfsays,“Ithascostmetwelveyearsofstudyandresearchtotraceoutthesourceofthisincrediblenumberofchronicaffections,todiscoverthisgreattruth,whichremainedconcealedfromallmypredecessorsandcontemporaries,toestablishthebasisofitsdemonstration,andfindout,atthesametime,thecurativemedicinesthatwerefittocombatthishydrainallitsdifferentforms。“
  But,inthefaceofallthis,thefollowingremarksaremadebyWolff,ofDresden,whoseessays,accordingtotheeditorofthe“HomoeopathicExaminer,““representtheopinionsofalargemajorityofHomoeopathistsinEurope。“
  “ItcannotbeunknowntoanyoneatallfamiliarwithHomoeopathicliterature,thatHahnemann’sideaoftracingthelargemajorityofchronicdiseasestoactualitchhasmetwiththegreatestoppositionfromHomoeopathicphysiciansthemselves。“Andagain,“IfthePsorictheoryhasledtonoproperschism,thereasonistobefoundinthefactthatitisalmostwithoutanyinfluenceinpractice。“
  WearetoldbyJahr,thatDr。Griesselich,“SurgeontotheGrandDukeofBaden,“anda“distinguished“Homoeopathist,actuallyaskedHahnemannfortheproofthatchronicdiseases,suchasdropsy,forinstance,neverarisefromanyothercausethanitch;andthat,accordingtocommonreport,thevenerablesagewashighlyincensedfortcourroucewithDr。Hartmann,ofLeipsic,another“distinguished“Homoeopathist,formaintainingthattheycertainlydidarisefromothercauses。
  AndDr。Fielitz,inthe“HomoeopathicGazette“ofLeipsic,aftersaying,inagood-naturedway,thatPsoraistheDevilinmedicine,andthatphysiciansaredividedonthispointintodiabolistsandexorcists,declaresthat,accordingtoaremarkofHahnemann,thewholecivilizedworldisaffectedwithPsora。ImustthereforedisappointanyadvocateofHahnemannwhomayhonormewithhispresence,bynotattackingadoctrineonwhichsomeofthedisciplesofhiscreedwouldbeveryhappytohaveitsadversarieswastetheirtimeandstrength。Iwillnotmeddlewiththisexcrescence,which,thoughoftenusedintimeofpeace,wouldbedropped,likethelimbofashell-fish,themomentitwasassailed;timeistooprecious,andtheharvestoflivingextravagancesnodstooheavilytomysickle,thatIshouldbluntituponstrawandstubble。
  IwillclosethesubjectwithabriefexaminationofsomeofthestatementsmadeinHomoeopathicworks,andmoreparticularlyinthebrilliantManifestoofthe“Examiner,“beforereferredto。Andfirst,itistherestatedundertheheadof“HomoeopathicLiterature,“that“SEVENHUNDREDvolumeshavebeenissuedfromthepressdevelopingthepeculiaritiesofthesystem,andmanyofthempossessedofascientificcharacterthatsavansknowwellhowtorespect。“Ifmyassertionwereproperevidenceinthecase,Ishoulddeclare,that,havingseenagoodmanyofthesepublications,fromtheyear1834,whenIboughttheworkoftheRev。ThomasEverest,“
  [Dr。Curiespeaksofthissillypamphletashavingbeenpublishedin1835。]towithinafewweeks,whenIreceivedmylastimportationofHomaeopathicliterature,Ihavefoundthatall,withaveryfewexceptions,werestitchedpamphletsvaryingfromtwentyorthirtypagestosomewhatlessthanahundred,andgenerallyresemblingeachotherasmuchassomanyspelling-books。
  Butnotbeingevidenceinthecase,IwillgiveyouthetestimonyofDr。Trinks,ofDresden,whoflourishesonthefifteenthpageofthesameManifestoasoneofthemostdistinguishedamongtheHomoeopathistsofEurope。Itranslatethesentenceliterallyfromthe“ArchivesdelaMedecineHomoeopathique。“
  “TheliteratureofHomoeopathy,ifthathonorablenamemustbeappliedtoallkindsofbook-making,hasbeendegradedtotheconditionofthehumblestservitude。Productionswithouttalent,withoutspirit,withoutdiscrimination,flatandpitifuleulogies,exaggerationssurpassingthelimitsofthemostrobustfaith,invectivesagainstsuchasdaredtodoubtthedogmaswhichhadbeenproclaimed,orcataloguesofremedies;ofsuchmaterialsisitcomposed!Fromdistancetodistanceonly,haveappearedsomememoirsusefultoscienceorpractice,whichappearassomanygreenoasesinthemidstofthisliterarydesert。“
  Itisaverynaturalaswellasacuriousquestiontoask,WhathasbeenthesuccessofHomoeopathyinthedifferentcountriesofEurope,andwhatisitspresentcondition?
  ThegreatestrelianceoftheadvocatesofHomoeopathyisofcourseonGermany。Weknowverylittleofitsmedicalschools,itsmedicaldoctrines,oritsmedicalmen,comparedwiththoseofEnglandandFrance。And,therefore,whenanintelligenttravellergivesadirectaccountfrompersonalinspectionofthemiserableconditionoftheHomoeopathichospitalatLeipsic,thefirstestablishedinEurope,andthefirstonthelistoftheever-memorableManifesto,itiseasyenoughansweroreludethefactbycitingvarioushardnamesof“distinguished“practitioners,whichsoundjustaswelltotheuninformedpublicasiftheywereMeckel,orTiedemann,orLangenbeck。Dr。Leo-Wolf,who,tobesure,isopposedtoHomoeopathy,butwhoisascholar,andoughttoknowsomethingofhisowncountrymen,assuresusthat“Dr。KoppistheonlyGermanHomoeopathist,ifwecancallhimso,whohasbeendistinguishedasanauthorandpractitionerbeforeheexaminedthismethod。“AndDr。
  Lee,thesamegentlemaninwhosetravelstheparagraphrelatingtotheLeipsicHospitalistobefound,saysthesamething。AndIwillcheerfullyexposemyselftoanyimpertinentremarkwhichitmightsuggest,toassuremyaudiencethatIneverheardorsawoneauthenticHomoeopathicnameofanycountryinEurope,whichIhadeverheardmentionedbeforeasconnectedwithmedicalsciencebyasinglewordordeedsufficienttomakeitinanydegreefamiliartomyears,unlessArnoldofHeidelbergistheanatomistwhodiscoveredalittlenervouscentre,calledtheoticganglion。ButyouneedasknobetterproofofwhoandwhattheGermanadherentsofthisdoctrinemustbe,thanthetestimonyofaGermanHomoeopathistastothewretchedcharacteroftheworkstheymanufacturetoenforceitsclaims。
  AsfortheactofthisorthatgovernmenttoleratingorencouragingHomoeopathy,everypersonofcommonintelligenceknowsthatitisamereformgrantedordeniedaccordingtothegeneralprinciplesofpolicyadoptedindifferentstates,orthedegreeofinfluencewhichsomefewpersonswhohaveadopteditmayhappentohaveatcourt。
  WhatmaybethevalueofcertainpompoustitleswithwhichmanyoftheadvocatesofHomoeopathyarehonored,itmightbedisrespectfultoquestion。ButinthemeantimethejudiciousinquirermayponderoveranextractwhichItranslatefromapaperrelatingtoapersonagewellknowntothecommunityasWilliamstheOculist,withwhomIhadthehonorofcrossingtheAtlanticsomeyearssince,andwhohimselfhandedmetwocopiesofthepaperinquestion。
  “TosaythathewasoculistofLouisXVIII。andofCharlesX。,andthathenowenjoysthesametitlewithrespecttoHisMajesty,LouisPhilippe,andtheKingoftheBelgians,isunquestionablytosayagreatdeal;andyetitisoneoftheleastofhistitlestopublicconfidence。Hisreputationrestsuponabasismoresubstantialeventhanthenumerousdiplomaswithwhichheisprovided,thanthemembershipofthedifferentmedicalsocietieswhichhavechosenhimastheirassociate,“etc。,etc。
  Andastoonemorepoint,itistimethatthepublicshouldfullyunderstandthatthecommonmethodofsupportingbarefacedimpostureatthepresentday,bothinEuropeandinthiscountry,consistsintrumpingup“Dispensaries,““CollegesofHealth,“andotheradvertisingcharitableclap-traps,whichusethepoorasdecoy-ducksfortherich,andtheproprietorsofwhichhaveastrongpredilectionforthetitleof“Professor。“Thesenames,therefore,havecometobeoflittleornovalueasevidenceofthegoodcharacter,stilllessofthehighpretensionsofthosewhoinvoketheirauthority。
  Nordoesitfollow,evenwhenachairisfoundedinconnectionwithawell-knowninstitution,thatithaseitherasalaryoranoccupant;
  sothatitmaybe,andprobablyis,amereharmlesspieceoftolerationonthepartofthegovernmentifaProfessorshipofHomoeopathyisreallyinexistenceatJenaorHeidelberg。Andfinally,inordertocorrecttheerrorofanywhomightsupposethatthewholeMedicalProfessionofGermanyhaslongsincefallenintothedelusionsofHahnemann,IwillquotetwolineswhichacelebratedanatomistandsurgeonwhosenamewilloccuragaininthislectureinconnectionwithaverypleasingletteraddressedtotheFrenchAcademyofMedicinein1835。“IhappenedtobeinGermanysomemonthssince,atameetingofnearlysixhundredphysicians;oneofthemwishedtobringupthequestionofHomoeopathy;theywouldnotevenlistentohim。“Thismayhavebeenveryimpoliteandbigoted,butthatisnotpreciselythepointinreferencetowhichImentionthecircumstance。
  ButifwecannoteasilygetatGermany,wecanveryeasilyobtainexactinformationfromFranceandEngland。ItookthetroubletowritesomemonthsagototwofriendsinParis,inwhomIcouldplaceconfidence,forinformationuponthesubject。Oneofthemansweredbrieflytotheeffectthatnothingwassaidaboutit。WhenthelateCuratoroftheLowellInstitute,athisrequest,askedabouttheworksuponthesubject,hewastoldthattheyhadremainedalongtimeontheshelvesquiteunsalable,andneverspokenof。
  Theothergentleman,[“Dr。HenryT。Bigelow,nowProfessorofSurgeryinHarvardUniversity。]whosenameiswellknowntomyaudience,andwhoneedsnocommendationofmine,hadthekindnesstoprocureformemanypublicationsuponthesubject,andsomeinformationwhichsetsthewholematteratrest,sofarasParisisconcerned。HewentdirectlytotheBaillieres,theprincipalandalmosttheonlypublishersofalltheHomoeopathicbooksandjournalsinthatcity。Thefollowingfactsweretakenbyhimfromtheaccount-booksofthispublishingfirm。FourHomoeopathicJournalshavebeenpublishedinParis;threeofthembytheBaillieres。
  Thereceptiontheymetwithmaybejudgedofbyshowingthenumberofsubscriberstoeachonthebooksofthepublishingfirm。
  AReviewpublishedbysomeotherhouse,whichlastedoneyear,andhadaboutfiftysubscribers,appearedin1834,1835。
  TherewereonlyfourJournalsofHomoeopathyeverpublishedinParis。
  TheBaillieresinformedmycorrespondentthatthesaleofHomoeopathicbookswasmuchlessthanformerly,andthatconsequentlytheyshouldundertaketopublishnonewbooksuponthesubject,exceptthoseofJahrorHahnemann。“Thisman,“saysmycorrespondent,——referringtooneofthebrothers,——“thepublisherandheadquartersofHomoeopathyinParis,informsmethatitisgoingdowninEnglandandGermanyaswellasinParis。“Forallthefactshehadstatedhepledgedhimselfasresponsible。
  HomoeopathywasinitsprimeinParis,hesaid,in1836and1837,andsincethenhasbeengoingdown。
  LouistoldmycorrespondentthatnopersonofdistinctioninParishadembracedHomoeopathy,andthatitwasdeclining。IfyouaskwhoLouisis,Ireferyoutothewell-knownHomoeopathist,PeschierofGeneva,whosays,addressinghim,“Irespectnoonemorethanyourself;thefeelingwhichguidesyourresearches,yourlabors,andyourpen,issohonorableandrare,thatIcouldnotbutbowdownbeforeit;andIown,iftherewereanyallopathistwhoinspiredmewithhigherveneration,itwouldbehimandnotyourselfwhomI

  Amongthenamesof“DistinguishedHomoeopathists,“however,displayedinimposingcolumns,intheindexofthe“HomoeopathicExaminer,“arethoseofMARJOLIN,AMUSSAT,andBRESCHET,nameswellknowntotheworldofscience,andthelastofthemidentifiedwithsomeofthemostvaluablecontributionswhichanatomicalknowledgehasreceivedsincethecommencementofthepresentcentury。OneDr。Chrysaora,whostandssponsorformanyfactsinthatJournal,makesthefollowingstatementamongtherest:“Professors,whoareesteemedamongthemostdistinguishedoftheFacultyFacultydeMedicine,bothastoknowledgeandreputation,haveopenlyconfessedthepowerofHomoeopathiainformsofdiseasewheretheordinarymethodofpracticeprovedtotallyinsufficient。Itaffordsmethehighestpleasuretoselectfromamongthesegentlemen,Marjolin,Amussat,andBreschet。“
