  Inhisownroomattheendofthesecond-storyhall,overthekitchen,Mr。Chasewassittingreadingthelocalpaperbeforeretiring。Itwasahabithehad,oneofwhichCaptainShadrachpretendedtoapprovehighly。“Bestthingintheworld,Isaiah,“
  declaredtheCaptain。“Sleep’swhateverybodyneedsandIcan’tthinkofanysurerwayofgettin’tosleepthanreadin’theSouthHarnissnewsinthatpaper。“
  Whetherornotthisunkindjokewasdeservedisnotmaterial;atalleventsIsaiahwasreadingthepaperwhenhewasverymuchstartledbyaknockatthedoor。
  “Who——whoisit?“hestammered。
  “ItisMary,“whisperedavoiceoutsidethedoor。“Iwanttospeakwithyou,Isaiah。You’renotinbed,areyou?“
  Isaiahreluctantlyrelinquishedthepaper。“No,no,“hereplied,“I
