  Mary-’Gustasmiled。“Ihavewondered——justalittle,“sheobserved,withmildsarcasm。

  ButMary-’Gustainterrupted。Thehenwasoffthenestnow,therewasnodoubtofthat,andofallunexpectedandimpossiblehatchingsherswasthemostcomplete。Theabsurdityoftheidea,tothegirl’smind,overshadowedeventhesurpriseofit。
  “What?“shesaid。“UncleShad,what——?DoyoumeanthatyouandUncleZoethhavebeeninconspiracytosendmeawaytoschool?TosendmeawaytoBoston?“
  Shadrachnodded。
  “Noconspiracyaboutit,“hedeclared。“MeandZoethandMr。Keith,we——“

  “Silly?Whyisitsilly?“
