Thefirstblowatthefullydevelopeddoctrineof“theFall“
came,aswehaveseen,fromgeology。Accordingtothatdoctrine,asheldquitegenerallyfromitsbeginningsamongthefathersanddoctorsoftheprimitiveChurchdowntoitsculminationinthemindsofgreatProtestantslikeJohnWesley,thestatementinoursacredbooksthat“deathenteredtheworldbysin“wastakenasahistoricfact,necessitatingtheconclusionthat,beforetheserpentpersuadedEvetoeatoftheforbiddenfruit,deathonourplanetwasunknown。Naturally,whengeologyrevealed,inthestrataofaperiodlongbeforethecomingofmanonearth,avastmultitudeofcarnivoroustribesfittedtodestroytheirfellow-creaturesonlandandsea,andwithinthefossilizedskeletonsofmanyofthesethepartiallydigestedremainsofanimals,thisdoctrinewastooheavytobecarried,anditwasquietlydropped。
