Nordidmedievalthinkersrestwiththisconception。Inaccordancewiththedominantviewthatphysicaltruthmustbesoughtbytheologicalreasoning,thedoctrinewasevolvedthatnotonlythesiteofthecrossonCalvarymarkedthegeographicalcentreoftheworld,butthatonthisveryspothadstoodthetreewhichboretheforbiddenfruitinEden。Thuswasgeographymadetoreconcileallpartsofthegreattheologicplan。Thisdoctrinewashailedwithjoybymultitudes;andwefindintheworksofmedievalpilgrimstoPalestine,againandagain,evidencethatthishadbecomeprecioustruthtothem,bothintheologyandgeography。Evenaslateas1664theeminentFrenchpriestEugeneRoger,inhispublishedtravelsinPalestine,dweltuponthethirty-eighthchapterofEzekiel,coupledwithatextfromIsaiah,toprovethattheexactcentreoftheearthisaspotmarkedonthepavementoftheChurchoftheHolySepulchre,andthatonthisspotoncestoodthetreewhichboretheforbiddenfruitandthecrossofChrist。[31]

III。THEINHABITANTSOFTHEEARTH。
Evenwhilethedoctrineofthesphericityoftheearthwasundecided,anotherquestionhadbeensuggestedwhichtheologiansfinallycametoconsideroffargreaterimportance。Thedoctrineofthesphericityoftheearthnaturallyledtothoughtregardingitsinhabitants,andanotherancientgermwaswarmedintolife——theideaofantipodes:ofhumanbeingsontheearth’soppositesides。

InallthiscontentionbyGregoryandLactantiustherewasnothingtobeespeciallyregretted,for,whatevertheirmotive,theysimplysupportedtheirinheritedbeliefongroundsofnaturallawandprobability。
Unfortunately,thediscussionwasnotlongallowedtorestonthesescientificandphilosophicalgrounds;otherChristianthinkersfollowed,whointheirardouradducedtextsofScripture,andsoonthequestionhadbecometheological;
