  Onthewhole,Ithinkthatthenoticesofsocmen’stenureintheHundredRollsareespeciallyprecious,becausetheyprovethattheobservationsthatwehavemadeasregardsfreeholdgenerallyarenotmerelyingenioussuggestionsaboutwhatmayconceivablyhavehappened。Thereisundoubtedlyoneweakpointinthoseobservations,whichisduetothemethodwhichwearecompelledtoadopt。Itisdifficult,ifnotimpossible,toclassifytheactualcaseswhichcomebeforeus,tosay-inthiscasefreeholdistheresultofcommutation,inthatcasethelordhasenfeoffedaretainerorakinsman,whileinthisthirdcase,thefreeholdvirgatehasalwaysbeenfreehold。Theedgeoftheinquiryisblunted,ifImaysosay,bythevaguenessofterminologicaldistinctions,andwemustrelyupongeneralimpressions。Thesocman’stenure,onthecontrary,standsoutasaclearcase,andacarefulanalysisofitabundantlyverifiestheconclusionstowhichwehavepreviouslycomebyamorecircuitousroute。
