  a。Asceticism——Theself-surrendermaybecomesopassionateastoturnintoself-immolation。Itmaythensoover-ruletheordinaryinhibitionsofthefleshthatthesaintfindspositivepleasureinsacrificeandasceticism,measuringandexpressingastheydothedegreeofhisloyaltytothehigherpower。

  c。Purity——Theshiftingoftheemotionalcentrebringswithit,first,increaseofpurity。Thesensitivenesstospiritualdiscordsisenhanced,andthecleansingofexistencefrombrutalandsensualelementsbecomesimperative。Occasionsofcontactwithsuchelementsareavoided:thesaintlylifemustdeepenitsspiritualconsistencyandkeepunspottedfromtheworld。Insometemperamentsthisneedofpurityofspirittakesanasceticturn,andweaknessesoftheflesharetreatedwithrelentlessseverity。
