  Inhayingthereisnolargeplaceforskill。Thisoperation,unlikethatofturnip-hoeing,demandschieflystrength,quickness,andendurance,andespeciallyendurance。Tostandalldayinthehayfieldundertheburningsunwithitsraysleapingbackfromthesuper-heatedground,androllupthewindrowsintohugebundlesandtossthemontothewagon,ortorunupalonglineofcocksandheavethemfork-handlehightothetopofaload,callsforsomethingofskill,butmainlyforstrengthofarmandback。Butskillhaditsplace,andoncemoreitwasTimwhostoodclosetoCameronandshowedhimallthetricksofpitchinghay。ItwasTimwhoshowedhimhowtostandwithhisbacktothewagonsoastogettheloadproperlypoisedwiththeleastexpenditureofstrength;itwasTimwhotaughthimthecunningtrickofusinghisthighasafulcrumingettinghisloadup,ratherthandoingitby”mainstrengthandawkwardness”;itwasTimwhodemonstratedthemethodofliftinghalfacockbyrunningtheendoftheforkhandleintothegroundsothatthewholeearthmightaidinthehoistingoftheload。OfcourseinallthisCameron’sintelligenceandquicknessstoodhimintheplaceoflongexperience,andbeforethefirstday’shaulingwasdonehewasabletokeephiswagongoing。

  But,morethanalltheotherirritatingelementsinhisenvironmentputtogether,CameronchafedundertheunceasingraspofPerkins’
