’Nowthesiegewaslong,andmanyafierceattemptdidtheenemymakeuponthetown,andmanyashrewdbrushdidsomeofthetownsmenmeetwithfromtheenemy,especiallyCaptainSelf-denial,towhosecarebothEar-gateandEye-gatehadbeenintrusted。ThisCaptainSelf-denialwasayoungman,butstout,andatownsmaninMansoul。Thisyoungcaptain,therefore,beingahardyman,andamanofgreatcouragetoboot,andwillingtoventurehimselfforthegoodofthetown,hewouldnowandthensallyoutupontheenemy;butyoumustthinkthiscouldnoteasilybedone,buthemustmeetwithsomesharpbrusheshimself,and,indeed,hecarriedseveralofsuchmarksonhisface,yea,andsomeonsomeotherpartsofhisbody。’Thus,Bunyan。Ishallnowgoonto-nighttoofferyousomeannotationsandsomereflectionsonthisshortbutexcellenthistoryofyoungCaptainSelf-denial。
1。Well,tobeginwith,thisCaptainSelf-denialwasstillayoungman。’And,now,itcomesintomymind,saidGoodmanGainsaftersupper,Iwilltellyouastorywellworththehearing,asIthink。
Thereweretwomenonceuponatimethatwentonpilgrimage;theonebeganwhenhewasyoungandtheotherbeganwhenhewasold。
Theyoungmanhadstrongcorruptionstograpplewith,whereastheoldman’scorruptionsweredecayedwiththedecaysofnature。Theyoungmantrodhisstepsasevenasdidtheoldone,andwaseverywayaslightashe;who,now,orwhichofthem,hadtheirgracesshiningclearest,sincebothseemedtobealike?Why,theyoungman’s,doubtless,answeredMr。Honest。Forthatwhichheadsagainstthegreatestoppositiongivesbestdemonstrationthatitisstrongest。Ayoungman,therefore,hastheadvantageofthefairestdiscoveryofaworkofgracewithinhim。Andthustheysattalkingtillthebreakofday。’

2。TheCaptainSelf-denialwasayoungman,andhewasalsoatownsmaninMansoul。YoungSelf-denialandoneotherwereallofEmmanuel’scaptainswhoweretownsmeninMansoul。AllhisothercaptainsEmmanuelhadbroughtwithhim;buttheCaptainsSelf-
denialandExperiencewerebothbornandrearedtotheirfullmanhoodinthatbesiegedcity。’Atownsman。’Howmuchthereisforusallinthatoneword!Howmuchinstruction!Howmuchencouragement!Howmuchcautionandcorrection!Ourgreatestgrace;ourmostessentialandindispensablegrace;ourmostexperimentalandevidentialgrace;thatgrace,indeed,withoutwhichallourothergracesarebutspeciousshowsandpaintedsurfacesofgraces;thatgraceintowhichourLordheregathersupallourothergraces;——thatgreatestofgracescannotbeimputed,imported,orintroduced;itmustbeborn,bred,exercised,reareduptoitsfullmaturity,andsentforthtofightandtoconquer,andallwithinthewallsofitsownnativetown;inshort,ourself-denialmusthaveitsbeginningandmiddleandendinourownheart。Antinomianstherewere,asourPuritanfathersnicknamedallthosepersonswhoglorifiedChristbylettingHimdoallthingsforthem,bothHisownthingsandtheirthingstoo,boththeirjustificationandtheirsanctificationtoo。Andtherearemanygoodbutill-instructedmenamongourselveswhohavejustthistaintofthatoldheresycleavingtothemstill——thistaint,namely,thattheyaretemptedtocarryoverthesuretyshipandsubstitutionaryworkofChristintosuchregions,andtocarryittosuchlengthsinthoseregions,as,practically,tomakeChristtoministertotheirsoftandsinfulliving,andtotheirexcuseandindulgenceofthemselves。Iwillputitsquarelyandplainlytosomeofmyverybestfriendshereto-night。Isitnotthecase,now,thatyoudonotlikethisdirectionintowhichthistext,andthetruthofthistext,arenowtravelling?Isitnotsothatyoushiftbackinyourseatfromtheapproachingcross?Isitnottheveryandactualfactthatyouhavesecretwaysofsin,secrethabitsofself-indulgenceinyourbodyandinyoursoul,inyourmindandinyourheart,secretsinsthatyoumantleoverwiththerobeofChrist’srighteousness?Hisspotlessandimputedrighteousness?InyourpresenttemperyouwouldhavedislikeddeeplytheSermonontheMounthadyouheardit;andIseeyoushakingyourheadoveryourSabbath-daydinneratthistextwhenitwasfirstspoken。Laythisdownforalaw,allmybrethren,——aNewTestamentandanever-to-be-abrogatedlaw,——thatthebestandthesafestreligionforyouisthatwayofreligionthatishardestonyourpride,onyourself-importance,onyourself-esteem,aswellasonyourpurseandonyourbelly。Youarenotlikelytoerrbypractisingtoomuchofthecross。YoumayverywellhavetoomuchofthecrossofChristpreachedtoyou,andtoolittleofyourown。
Why!didnotChristdieforme?youindignantlysay。Yes;soHedid。Butonlythatyoumightdietoo。Hewascrucified,andsomustyoubecrucifiedeverydaybeforeonesingledropofHissin-
atoningbloodshalleverbewastedonYou。Benotdeceived:thecrossisnotmocked;foronlyasamannailshimself,bodyandsoul,tothecrosseverydayshallheeverbesavedfromsinanddeathandhellbymeansofit。And,exactlyasamandenieshimself——nomoreandnoless——hisappetites,hispassions,histhoughtsandwordsanddeeds,everydayandeveryhourofeveryday,justsomuchshallHewhosearchesourheartsandseesusinsecret,acknowledgeus,botheverydaynow,andatthelastdayofall。
3。ThissameCaptainSelf-denial,hishistorygoeson,wasstout,hewasanhardymanalso,andamanofgreatcourage。Stoutandhardyandofgreatcourageathome,thatis;inhisownmindandheart,soulandbody,thatis。YoungCaptainSelf-denialwasaperfectheroatsayingNo!andatsayingNo!tohimself。Itisaproverbthatthereisnothingsodifficultastosaythatmonosyllable。AndtheproverbisScripturetruthifyoutrytosayNo!toyourself。Ittakestheverystoutestofhearts,themostnoble,themostmanly,themostsoldierly,andthemostsaintlyofheartstosayNo!toitself,andtokeeponsayingNo!toitselftothebitterendofeverytrialandtemptationandopportunity。I
rememberreadinglongagoapageortwoofamedicalman’sdiary。
AndinithemadeaconfessionandanappealIhaveneverforgot;
though,tomyloss,Ihavenotalwaysacteduponit。Hesaidthatformanyyearshehadneverbeenentirelywell。Hehadconstantheadachesanddepressions,anditwasseldomthathewasnottosomeextentoutofsorts。But,allthetime,hehadashrewdguesswithinhimselfastowhatwasthematterwithhim。Hefeltashamedtoconfessiteventohimselfthatheover-atehimselfeverydayattable;till,atlast,summoningupalldivineandhumanhelp,hedeterminedthat,howeverhungryhewas,andhoweversavourythedishwas,andhoweverexcellentthewinewas,hewouldnevereitheraskfororacceptasecondhelping。Andthiswashistestimony,thatfromthatstoutandhardydayhegrewbetterinhealthdaily;
’myheadbecameclear,myeyebright,mycomplexionpure,mymindandfeelingswereredeemedfromallcloudsanddepressions。Andto-dayIamayoungermanatfiftythanIwasatthirty。’Now,ifjustsayingNo!tohimselfandtothewaiterattabledidworksuchanewbirthinaconfirmedgourmandofmiddlelife,whatwoulditnothavewroughtforhimhadhecarriedhisanswerstoutlyandcourageouslythroughalltheotherpartsofhisbodyandsoul?——asperhapshedid。Perhaps,havingtastedthesweetbeginningsofsalvation,hecarriedhisshortandsureregimenthrough。Ifhehasdoneso,lethimgiveushisfullautobiography。Whatablessed,whatapricelessbookitwouldbe!
4。StoutCaptainSelf-denialwascommandedtobeginhislifeasanofficerinEmmanuel’sarmybytakingespecialwatchoverEar-gateandEye-gate;andatourlastaccountsofourabstemiousdoctorhehadonlygotthelengthofMouth-gate。Buthavingbegunsowellwiththosethreegreatoutpostsofthesoul,ifthosetwotrustyofficersonlyheldon,andplayedthemancourageouslyenough,theywouldsoonbepromotedtostillmoreimportant,stillmorecentral,and,ifmoredifficultanddangerous,thenalsomuchmorehonourableandremunerativeposts。Appetite,deepanddeadlyasitsevilsare,is,afterall,onlyanoutworkofthesoul;andthesamesharpknifethattheepicureandthesotinalltheirstagesmustputtotheirthroat,thatsameknifemustbemadetodrawbloodinallpartsoftheirmindandtheirheart,intheirwillandintheirimagination,tillaperfectchorusofself-denialsringslikenoblestmartialmusicthroughallthegates,andstreets,andfortresses,andstrongholds,andverypalacesandtemplesofthesoul。IshallherestandasideandletthegreatestoftheEnglishmysticsspeaktoyouonthispresentpoint。’Whenwespeakofself-denial,’hesays,inhisChristianPerfection,’weareapttoconfineittoeatinganddrinking:butweoughttoconsiderthat,thoughastricttemperancebenecessaryinthesethings,yetthatthesearetheeasiestandthesmallestinstancesofself-denial。
Pride,vanity,self-love,covetousness,envy,andotherinclinationsofthelikenaturecallforamoreconstantandamorewatchfulself-denialthantheappetitesofhungerandthirst。Andtillweenterintothiscourseofuniversalself-denialweshallmakenoprogressinrealpiety,butourliveswillbearidiculousmixtureofIknownotwhat;soberandcovetous,proudanddevout,temperateandvain,regularinourformsofdevotionandirregularinallourpassions,circumspectinlittlemodesofbehaviourandcarelessandnegligentoftempersthemostessentialtopiety。Andthusitwillnecessarilybewithustillwelaytheaxetotherootofthetree,tillwedenyandrenouncethewholecorruptionofournature,andresignourselvesupentirelytotheSpiritofGod,tothinkandspeakandactbythewisdomandthepurityofreligion。’
5。StoutasCaptainSelf-denialwas,andnotablealarmsandsomebriskexecutionashedidupontheenemy,yethemustmeetwithsomebrusheshimself;indeed,hecarriedseveralofthemarksofsuchbrushesonhisfaceaswellasonsomeotherpartsofhisbody。IfIhadreadinhishistorythatYoungCaptainSelf-denialhadlefthismarkuponhisenemies,Iwouldhavesaid,Welldone,andIwouldhaveaddedthatIalwaysexpectedasmuch。Butitisfarmoretomypurposetoreadthathehadnotalwaysgothimselfoffwithoutwoundsthatleftlastingscarsbothwheretheywereseenofall,andwheretheywereseenandfeltonlybySelf-denialhimself。AndnotSelf-denialonly,butevenPaul,inourflesh,andwithlikepassionswithus,hadthesameexperienceandhasleftusthesamerecord。’Ikeepmybodyunder’:soouremasculatedEnglishversionmakesusreadit。ButthevisualimageinthemasterlyoriginalGreekisnotsomealy-mouthed。Iboxandbuffetmyselfdayandnight,saysPaul。Iplaythetruculenttyrantoveralewdandlazyslave。Ihitmyselfblindingblowsonmytenderestpart。Iamashamedtolookatmyselfintheglass,forallundermyeyesIamblackandblue。IfDavid,afterthematterofUriah,haddonethattohimself,andevenmorethanthat,wewouldnothavewondered;wewouldhaveexpectedit,andwewouldhavesaid,Itisnomorethanwewouldhavedoneourselves。Butthataspotless,gentle,noblesoullikePaulshouldsohavemangledhimself,——thatquitedumfoundersus。IfPaul,then,who,touchingtherighteousnesswhichisinthelaw,wasblameless,hadtohandlehimselfinthatmannerinordertokeephimselfblameless,shallanyyoungmanherehopetoescapetemptationwithoutsuchblowsathimselfasshallleavetheirmarkonhimallhisdays?Nay,notonlyso,butafterSelf-denialhadthusexercisedhimselfandsubduedhimself,stillhisenemysometimesgotsuchanadvantageoverhimaslefthimashishistoryheredescribeshim。Allwhichissurelyfullofthemostexcellenthearteningtoallwhoread,inearnestandforanexample,hisfinehistory。
6。Thelastandcrowningexploitofourmatchlesscaptainwastocapture,andexecute,andquarter,andhanguponagallowsatthemarket-cross,theheadandthehandsandthefeetofhisoldest,mostsworn,andmostdeadlyenemy,oneSelf-love。SostoutandsoinsufferablewasourcaptaininthematterofSelf-lovethatwhenitwasproposedbysomeofhismanyinfluentialfriendsandhigh-
in-placerelationsinthecitythatthejudgmentofthecourt-
martialonSelf-loveshouldbedeferred,ourstoutsoldierwiththecutsonhisfaceandinsomeotherpartsofhisbodystoodup,andsaidthatthecityandthearmymustmakeuptheirmindeithertorelievehimofhissword,hackedandbrokenoffasitwas,orelsetoexecutethelawuponSelf-loveonthespot。Iwilllaydownmycommissionthisveryday,hesaid,withanextraordinaryindignation。Manyrichmeninthecity,andmanymendeepintheKing’sservice,mutteredmutinousthingswhentheirnearrelativewashurriedtotheopencause-way,butbythattimethesoldiersofSelf-denial’scompanyhadbrainedSelf-lovewiththebuttsoftheirmuskets。AnditwasthestandthatourcaptainmadeinthematterofSelf-lovethatatlastliftedtheyoungsoldierwheremanyhadfeltheshouldhavebeenliftedlongago。Fromthatdayhewasmadealord,amilitarypeer,andanadviserofthecrownandthecrownofficersinallthedeepestcounselsconcerningMansoul。
Only,withthecloakandthecoronetofSelf-denialthepresenthistoryallbutcomestoanend。For,beforetheoutcastremainsofSelf-lovehadmoulderedtotheirdustonthecitygate,theKing’schariothaddescendedintothestreet,hadascendeduptothepalaceattheheadofthestreet,andanewageofthecitylifehadbegun,thefullhistoryofwhichhasyettobetold。
Remainbehind,then,andbeginwithusto-night,allyouyoungmen。
Youcannotbeginthislifelongstudyandthislifelongpursuitofself-denialtooearly。For,evenifyoubegintoreadourbooksandtopractiseourdisciplineinyourveryboyhood,whenyouareoldmenandverysaintsofGodyouwillfeelthatyourself-loveisstillsofulloflifeandpower,thatyourself-denialhasscarcelybegun。Ah,me!men:botholdandyoungmen。Ah,me!whatalife’stasksetusofGoditistomakeusanewheart,tocleanseoutanuncleanheart,tolayinthedustaproudheart,andtokeepaheartatalltimes,andinallplaces,andtowardallpeople,withalldiligence!Whoissufficientforthesethings?
’NowwasChristiansomewhatinamaze。Butatlast,wheneverymanstartedbackforfear,Christiansawamanofaverystoutcountenancecomeuptohimthatsattherewiththeinkhorntowrite,saying,Setdownmyname,sir!Atwhichtherewasapleasantvoiceheardfromthosethatwerewithin,evenofthosewhowalkeduponthetopofthatplace,saying,”Comein,comein:

JohnBunyanneverlosthisearlyloveforasoldier’slifeanymorethanheeverforgottheraredelightsofhisbell-ringingdays。
JohnBunyan,allhisdays,neversawabell-ropethathisfingersdidnottingle,andheneversawasoldierinuniformwithoutinstinctivelyshoulderinghisyouthfulmusket。Bunyanwasoneofthoseraremenwhoareofimaginationallcompact;andconsequentlyitisthatallhisbooksarefullofthescenes,theoccupations,andtheexperiencesofhisearlydays。Notthathesaysverymuch,inasmanywords,aboutwhathappenedtohiminthedayswhenhewasasoldier;itisonlyonceinallhismanybooksthathesaysthatwhenhewasasoldiersuchandsuchathinghappenedtohim。
Atthesametime,allhisbooksbeartheimpressofhisearlydaysuponthem;andasforthisspecialbookofBunyan’snowopenbeforeus,itisfullfromboardtoboardofthestrifeandthedinofhisearlybattles。TheHolyWarisjustJohnBunyan’ssoldierlylifespiritualised——spiritualisedandsoworkedupintothisfineEnglishClassic。

Wellontowardtheendofthewar,theCaptainCredencehadsoacquittedhimselfthathewassummonedonedaytothePrince’squarters,whenthefollowingcolloquyensued:’WhathathmyLordtosaytoHisservant?’Andthen,afterasignortwooffavour,itwassaidtohim:’IhavemadetheelieutenantoveralltheforcesinMansoul;sothat,fromthisdayforward,allmeninMansoulshallbeatthyword;andthoushaltbehethatshallleadinandthatshallleadoutMansoul。Andatthycommandshallalltherestofthecaptainsbe。’Mybrethren,youwillhavethewholekeytoallthatinyourselvesifthissamewarhasgonethislengthinyou。Faith,yourfaithinGod,andinthewordofGod,will,asthisinwardwargoeson,notonlyleadthevaninyourheartandinyourlife,butjustbecauseyourfaithsoleadsinallthings,andissofittedtoleadinallthings,itwillatlastbeliftedupandsetoveryoursoul,andallthethingsofyoursoul,tillnothingshallbedoneinanyofthestreets,orgates,orwallsthereofthatfaithinGodandinHisworddoesnotfirstallowandadmit。Andthen,whenithascometothatwithinyou,thatisthebestmind,thatisthesafest,thehappiest,andthemostheavenlymindthatyoucanattaintointhispresentlife;andwhenfaithshallthusleadandruleoverallthingsinthysoul,bethoualwaysready,forthyspeedytranslationtoastillbetterlifeisjustatthedoor。

WehavenoheartleftforanyonebutHim,orforanythingwithoutorwithintheveilthatHeisnotandisnotin。Andtillthathopealsohasmadeusashamed,——tillHeandHispromiseshavefaileduslikealltherest,——wearegoingtoanchorourheartsonthat,andonthatonly,whichwebelieveiswithHimwithintheveil。IfourForerunneralsodisappointsus;ifweenterwhereHeis,onlytofindthatHeisnotthere;orthat,thoughthere,HeisnotabletosatisfyourhopeinHim,andmakeuslikeHimself,thenweshallbeofallmenthemostmiserable。Butnottillthen。No;

andsomeoutofnothingelsebutthepureoriginaldevilryoftheirownevilhearts。Andthen,whenwetakeallthesemenhometoourhearts,whatheartsallthesemengiveus!Who,then,isthemanherewhohasdonetoothermenthemosthurt?Whohascausedorbeentheoccasionofmosthurt?Letthatsounhappymanjustthinkthatthegallantcommander,theCaptainInnocenthimself,withhiswhitecoloursandwithhisgoldendoves,isstandingandknockingatyourevildoor。Ounhappyman!Byallthehurtandharmyouhaveeverdone——byallthatyoucannevernowundo——bythosespotlesscoloursthatarestillsnowandnotyetscarletastheywaveoveryou——bythosethreegoldendovesthatareanemblemofthelifethatstillliesopenbeforeyou,aswellasaninvitationtoyoutoenteronthatlife——whywillyoudieofremorseanddespair?OpenthedoorofyourheartandadmitCaptainInnocent。

Mr。Desires-awakedweltinaverymeancottageinMansoul。ThereweretwoverymeancottagesinMansoul,andthosetwocottagesstoodbesideoneanotherandleanedupononeanotherandheldoneanotherup。Mr。Desires-awakedweltintheoneofthosecottagesandMr。Wet-eyesintheother。Andthosetwomendicantmenwerewonttomeettogetherforsecretprayer,whenMr。Desires-awakewouldputaropeuponhishead,whileMr。Wet-eyeswouldnotbeabletospeakforwringinghishandsintearsallthetime。Manyatimedidthosetwomeanestandmostdespisedofmendeliverthatcity,accordingtotheproverbofthePreacher:Wisdomisbetterthanstrength,andthewordsofwisdomaretobeheardinsecretplaces,wherewisdomisfarbetterthanweaponsofwar。WhyshouldInotdoallforthemandthebestIcan?saidMr。Desires-awakewhenthemenofMansoulcametohimintheirextremity。IwillevenventuremylifeagainforthematthepavilionofthePrince。
Andaccordinglythismeanmanputhisropeuponhishead,aswashiswont,andwentouttothePrince’stentandaskedthereformadesifhemightseetheirMaster。ThenthePrince,comingtotheplacewherethepetitionerlayontheground,demandedwhathisnamewasandofwhatesteemhewasinMansoul,andwhyhe,ofallthemultitudesofMansoul,wassentouttoHisRoyaltentonsuchanerrand。ThensaidthemantothePrincestandingoverhim,hesaid:OhletnotmyLordbeangry;andwhyinquirestThouafterthenameofsuchadeaddogasIam?Passby,IprayThee,andtakenotnoticeofwhoIam,becausethereis,asThouverywellknowest,sogreatadisproportionbetweenTheeandme。Formypart,Iamoutofcharitywithmyself;who,then,shouldbeinlovewithme?YetliveIwould,andsowouldIthatmytownsmenshould;
andbecauseboththeyandmyselfareguiltyofgreattransgressions,thereforetheyhavesentme,andIhavecomeintheirnamestobegofmyLordformercy。LetitpleaseThee,therefore,toinclinetomercy;butasknotwhoThyservantis。
Allthis,andhowMr。Desires-awakeandMr。Wet-eyesspedintheirpetition,istobereadatlengthintheHolyHistory。Andnowletustakedownthekeythathangsinourauthor’swindowandgotoworkwithitonthesweetmysteryofMr。Desires-awake。
1。Well,then,tobeginwith,thispoorman’snameneednotdelayuslongseekingitout。Inshortertime,andwithsurersuccessthanIcouldgiveyouthedictionaryrootofhisname,ifyouwilllookwithinyouwillallseethevisualimageofthispoorman’snameinyourownheart。Forourheartsareallasfullastheycanholdofallkindsofdesires;somegoodandsomebad,someasleepandsomeawake,somealiveandsomedead,someraginglikeahundredhungrylions,andsomesatisfiedasasleepingchild。
Well,then,thismeanmanwascalledMr。Desires-awake,andwhathisdesireswereawakeafterandsetuponwehavealreadyseeninhishead-dressandheardinhisprayer。Hishouse,ontheotherhand,willnotbesowellknown。Foritwaslessahousethanahut——ahuthiddenawayoutofsightandbackbehindMr。Wet-eyes’

Theyneverlefttheircottages,thosetwopoormen,unlessitwastoseeoneanother;or,strangetotell,unlessitwastogooutatthecitygatetoseeandtospeakwiththeirPrince。AndatsuchtimestheirventuresomenessbothastonishedthemselvesandamusedtheirPrince。Sometimeshelaughedtoseethembackathisdooragain;butmoreoftenhewepttoseeandhearthem;allwhichmadetheguardsofhispaviliontowonderwhothosetwostrangemenmightbe。AndthusitwasthatifatanylongintervaloftimeanyofthemenofthecitydesiredtoseeMr。Desires-awake,hewassuretobefoundatthepaviliondoorofhisPrince,orelseinhisneighbour’scottage,orelseathomeinhisown。Fromyear’sendtoyear’sendyoumightlookinvainforeitherofthosetwopoormeninthepublicresortsofMansoul。Whenallthetownwasabroadonholidaysandfair-daysandfeast-days,thosetwomeanmenwerethenclosestathome。Andwhentheboothsofthetownwerefullofallkindsofwaresandmerchandise,andallthegreensinthetownwerefullofgames,andplays,andcheats,andfools,andapes,andknaves,onlythosetwopennilessmenwouldabideshutupathome。
Athome;orelsetogethertheywouldgotoamarket-stancesetupbytheirPrinceoutsidethewallswhereonewasstationedtostandandtocry:’Ho!everyonethatthirsteth,comeyetothewaters,andhethathathnomoney。Whereforedoyespendmoneyforthatwhichisnotbread,andyourlabourforthatwhichsatisfiethnot?
Inclineyourearandcometome;hear,andyoursoulshalllive。’
AndsometimesthePrincewouldgooutinpersontomeetthetwomenwithnothingtopay,andwouldHimselfsaytothem,IcounseltheetobuyofMegoldtriedinthefire,andwhiteraiment,andanointthineeyeswitheye-salve,tillthetwomen,Mr。Desires-awakeandMr。Wet-eyes,wouldgohometotheirhutsladenwiththeirPrince’sfreegiftsandroyalbounties。

Mr。Desires-awake’scontinualrope?Inolddayswhenaguiltymancameofhisownaccordtothejudgetoconfesshimselfdeservingofdeath,hewouldputaropeuponhishead。Andthatropeasmuchassaidtothejudgeandtoallmen——themiserablemanasgoodassaid:Thisismydesert。Thisisthewagesofmysin。Ijustifymyjudge。Ijudgemyself。Iherebydomyselftodeath。Anditwasthisthatsoangeredthehappyholiday-makersofMansoul。Fortheyforgavethemselves。Theyjustifiedthemselves。Theyputahighpriceuponthemselves。Humiliationandsorrowforsinwasnotinalltheirthoughts;andtheyhatedandhuntedbackintohishutthehumblemanwhosegaitandgarbalwaysremindedthemoftheirpastlifeandoftheirlatterend。Butforalltheycoulddo,Mr。
Desires-awakewouldwearhisrope。Mysoulchoosethstranglingratherthansin,hewouldsay。Mysinhathfoundmeout,hewouldsay;Ihatemyself,hewouldsay,becauseofmysin。Icondemnanddenouncemyself。Ihangmyselfupwiththisropeontheaccursedtree。AndthusitwasthatwhileothermenwerecrucifyingtheirPrinceafresh,Mr。Desires-awakewascrucifyinghimselfwithandafterhisPrince。AndthusitwasthatwhilethemenandthewomenofthetownsohatedandsomockedMr。Desires-awake,hisPrincesolovedandsohonouredhim。
