  Ateightinthemorningalieutenant-colonelofcavalryenteredthehouseofDonaPerfectaPolentinoswithhisbillet。Hewasreceivedbytheservants,byorderofitsmistress,who,beingatthetimeinadeplorablestateofmind,didnotwishtogodownstairstomeetthesoldier,andbythemhewasshowntotheonlyroominthehousewhich,itseemed,wasdisposable,theroomoccupiedbyPepeRey。

  room。Therehefoundhisaunt,whohadjustreturnedfromthecathedralwhereshehadspentthemorningaswasherhabit。Shewasalone,andappearedtobegreatlypreoccupied。Theengineerobservedthatonthatpaleandmarble-likecountenance,notwithoutacertainbeauty,thererestedamysteriousshadow。Whenshelookedupitrecovereditssinistercalmness,butshelookedupseldom,andafterarapidexaminationofhernephew'scountenance,thatoftheamiableladywouldagaintakeonitsstudiedgloom。
  Theyawaiteddinnerinsilence。TheydidnotwaitforDonCayetano,forhehadgonetoMundogrande。WhentheysatdowntotableDonaPerfectasaid:
