  Hebowedafarewell,makingthesignofthecrossuponCagliostro,andbenthisstepstothethrone,raisingtheveilwhichenvelopedLorenza。Shelookeduptohimwithglowingcheeksandsparklingeyes,smiling。Bythisshewouldexpressherthanksfortheprincelygifttoherhusband,andsweartotheGeneralherdelight,herfidelity,andlove。Heregardedherascoldlyandcalmlyasaphysicianapatient。

  Hiswifewasnotintheleastastonishedatthisthoughtfulconductofherhusband。Sheimpetuouslyseizedthesealeddocument,and,retiringtothewindow-niche,slowlyunfoldedit,whilsttheoldgeneralfixedhislittlegrayeyesuponheremotionlessface。Hisownwasbloatedandred,expressingthegreatestanxietyandexpectation。Perfectstillnessreignedforsomeminutes,onlytheregularstrokesofthependulumwereheardfromtheclockonthewall;and,asthehandspointedtotheexpirationofthehour,acuckoosprangoutofthetreepaintedoverthedial,andeleventimesherhoarse,croakingvoicewasheard。
