  LENDEMAIN。

  Therefore,everyoneexertedhimselftopleasethequeen,andtocatcheverylook,everysmile,whichsheletfall,likesunbeams,hereandthere,inordertoseeforwhomtheywereintended,sothattheymight,perchance,bythismeans,divinewhoweretobethefuturefavoritesofthequeen,andbethefirsttobecomeintimatewiththem。

  Afterthegrandpresentation,atwhichallthegreatandnobleoftherealmhadpassedinformalprocessionbeforetheroyalpair,thekinghad,accordingtothecourtetiquetteofthetime,givenhishandtohisconsort,ledherdownfromthethroneandconductedhertothemiddleofthehall,inordertopresenttoherthepersonagesinwaitingathercourt。
  Butthiswalkfromthethronetothecentreofthehallhadgreatlyfatiguedtheking;thispromenadeofthirtystepswasforhimaveryunusualandtroublesomeperformance,andthekinglongedtochangetosomethingelsemoreagreeable。Sohebeckonedtothechiefmasterofceremonies,andbadehimopenthedoorleadingintothedining-

  Thelisthadbegunwiththelessimportantoffices,and,everascendinghigher,theynowcametopositionsthehighestandofgreatestconsequence。
  Stillthequeen'smasterofhorseandthechamberlainhadnotbeennamed,andthesewerewithoutdoubtthemostimportantchargesatthequeen'scourt。Foroneortheotheroftheseofficerswasalwaysverynearthequeen。Whenshewasinthepalace,thelordofthechamberhadtoremainintheanteroom,andnoonecouldapproachthequeenbutthroughhismediation。Tohimthequeenhadtogiveherorderswithregardtotheschemesandpleasuresoftheday。Hewastocontrivenewdiversionsandamusements。Hehadtherightofjoiningthequeen'snarroweveningcircle,andtostandbehindthequeen'schairwhentheroyalpair,attimes,desiredtosupwithoutceremony。
  Thisplaceofchiefchamberlainwas,therefore,averyimportantone;forsinceitconfinedhimalargepartofthedayinthequeen'spresence,itwasscarcelyavoidablethatthelordchamberlainshouldbecomeeithertheconfidentialandattentivefriend,orthemalevolentandlurkingenemyofthequeen!
