  First,thatBevern;onmessageaftermessage,sentnoreinforcement;thatWinterfeldwaslefttohisown10,000,andwhatheandtheycouldmakeofit。BevernisjealousofWinterfeld,hintthey,andwillingtoseehisimpetuousaudacitychecked。
  Perhapsonlycautiousofgettingintoageneralactionforwhatwasintrinsicallynothing?Second,thattworegimentsofInfantry,whomWinterfelddetacheddouble—quicktoseizeacoupleofvillages(Leopoldshayn,Hermsdorf)onhisright,andtherefromfusilladeNadastionflank,foundthevillagesalreadyoccupiedbythousandsofCroats,withregularfootandcannon—batteries,andcouldinnowiseseizethem。Thiswasagreatreverseofadvantage。

  TheSoubise—HildburghausenpeoplehadgotrendezvousedatErfurtaboutAugust25th;50,000byaccount,andnoenemywithin200milesofthem;andintheVersaillescirclesithadbeenexpectedtheywouldproceedtothe"DeliveranceofSaxony"straightway。Whatistohinder?——Friedrich,hagglingwiththeAustriansatBernstadt,couldmusterbutapoor23,000,whenhedidmarchtowardsErfurt。

  IntheVersaillescircles,itisfartherexpectedthatRichelieu,"ConquerorofMinorca,"willshortlybesiegeandconquerMagdeburg,andsocrownhisglories。Whynot;werethe"DeliveranceofSaxony"complete?
