  NoneoftheOrdersrosesohighastheTeutonicinfavorwithmankind。IthadbydegreeslandedpossessionsfarandwideoverGermanyandbeyond:IknownothowmanydozensofBALLEYS(richBailliwicks,eachagainwithitsdozensofCOMTHUREIS,Commanderies,orsubordinategroupsofestates),andBailliesandCommanderstomatch;——andwasthoughttodeservefavorfromabove。
  Valiantservants,these;towhomHeavenhadvouchsafedgreatlaborsandunspeakableblessings。Insomefiftyorfifty—threeyearstheyhadgotPrussianHeathenismbroughttotheground;
  andtheyendeavoredtotieitwelldowntherebybargainandarrangement。Butitwouldnotyetliequiet,norforacenturytocome;beingstillsecretlyHeathen;revolting,conspiringeveragain,everonweakerterms,tilltheSatanicelementhadburntitselfout,andconversionandcomposurecouldensue。
  Conversionandcompleteconquestoncecome,therewasahappytimeforPrussia:ploughshareinsteadofsword;busysea—havens,Germantowns,gettingbuilt;churcheseverywhererising;grassgrowing,andpeaceablecows,whereformerlyhadbeenquagmireandsnakes。
  AndfortheOrderahappytime?Arich,notahappy。TheOrderwasvictorious;Livonian"Sword—Brothers,""KnightsofDobryn,"minorOrdersandAuthoritiesallround,werelongsincesubordinatedtoitorincorporatedwithit;Livonia,Courland,Lithuania,areallgottamedunderitsinfluence,ortieddownandevidentlytamable。
  ButitwasinthesetimesthattheOrdergotintoitswidertroublesoutwardandinward;quarrels,jealousies,withChristianneighbors,Poland,Pommern,whodidnotloveitandforcause;
  ——widertroubles,andbynomeanssoevidentlyusefultomankind。TheOrder’swages,inthisworld,flowedhigherthanever,onlyperhapsitsworkwasbeginningtorunlow!Butwewillnotanticipate。
  Onthewhole,thisTeutschRitterdom,forthefirstcenturyandmore,wasagrandphenomenon;andflamedlikeabrightblessedbeaconthroughthenightofthings,inthoseNorthernCountries。
  Foraboveacentury,weperceive,itwastherallyingplaceofallbravemenwhohadacareertoseekontermsotherthanvulgar。
