  *BILOQUIUM,orventrilocution。Soundisvariedaccordingtothevariationsofdirectionanddistance。Theartoftheventriloquistconsistsinmodifyinghisvoiceaccordingtoallthesevariations,withoutchanginghisplace。SeetheworkoftheAbbedelaChappelle,inwhichareaccuratelyrecordedtheperformancesofoneoftheseartists,andsomeingenious,thoughunsatisfactoryspeculationsaregivenonthemeansbywhichtheeffectsareproduced。Thispoweris,perhaps,givenbynature,butisdoubtlessimprovable,ifnotacquirable,byart。Itmay,possibly,consistinanunusualflexibilityorexertionofthebottomofthetongueandtheuvula。Thatspeechisproduciblebythesealonemustbegranted,sinceanatomistsmentiontwoinstancesofpersonsspeakingwithoutatongue。Inonecase,theorganwasoriginallywanting,butitsplacewassuppliedbyasmalltubercle,andtheuvulawasperfect。Intheother,thetonguewasdestroyedbydisease,butprobablyasmallpartofitremained。
  Thispowerisdifficulttoexplain,butthefactisundeniable。Experienceshewsthatthehumanvoicecanimitatethevoiceofallmenandofallinferioranimals。Thesoundofmusicalinstruments,andevennoisesfromthecontactofinanimatesubstances,havebeenaccuratelyimitated。Themimicryofanimalsisnotorious;andDr。BurneyMusicalTravelsmentionsonewhoimitatedafluteandviolin,soastodeceiveevenhisears。
